Amanda Schmidt scores over her defender and finishes with 11 points.
The Gillespie girls’ basketball team snagged fourth place in the Carlinville Holiday Tournament last week after falling to the Nokomis Redskins in the fourth and final round, 36-49. The young Lady Miners put up a tough fight against Nokomis, but lacked scoring opportunities against the Redskins’ zone defense.
Nokomis was led by Ashley Schneider who posted 30 points for the team as Lacey Knodle followed with 10. The Redskins had many easy scoring opportunities after beating Gillespie’s defensive press and getting an open shot at the basket.
Amanda Schmidt was chosen to be on the six-person All-Tournament Team of the Carlinville Holiday Tournament.
Gillespie trailed 7-14 after the first quarter and then 12-24 by halftime before Amanda Schmidt and Bailey Jarman ignited the second half. Jarman ended with 12 points for the team and Schmidt followed with 11 as Gillespie outscored Nokomis 12-11 in the third quarter bringing the deficit to 24-35 by the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Miners were within striking distance in the third quarter, but the team’s dribble drive offense wasn’t successful against the 2-3 zone played by Nokomis. Gillespie usually shoots a high percentage from the perimeter led by Bette Hammann, but the Lady Miners only had two made three-pointers in the matchup – both by Karli Carr who finished with 8 points.
After making 6 of 14 attempted free throws and only 6 points from the three-point arc, the Gillespie girls brought home 4th place in the eight-team girls division. Coach Kevin Gray was happy with the team’s performance saying the team is young and improving.
Despite the Gillespie Lady Miners not having any seniors on their varsity roster, Amanda Schmidt was chosen to be on the six-person All-Tournament Team of the Carlinville Holiday Tournament. Schmidt finished with 72 points from the four games in the tournament and led the team’s scoring in three of the four games.
