The Gillespie Miners baseball team picked up a 5-3 win over Greenville on Monday, May 6.
Bryce Buhs had another stellar night on the mound for Gillespie. Buhs surrendered three runs on three hits, pocketing 10 strikeouts in the game. Tristen Wargo also made a relief appearance to earn the win, allowing 2 hits, no runs, and striking out 4. Ben Hutchinson took the loss for Greenville. Hutchinson gave up two runs on three hits.
Gillespie and Greenville went back and forth with taking the lead, ending the game by going into extra innings with 10 innings of play.
Collin Griffith led the Miners in hits. Griffith went 3 for 5 at the plate with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Wargo went 2 for 4 at the top of the lineup with 1 RBI. Jesse Berry and Jack Kaylor went 2 for 5 at the plate, both driving in a run in their winning efforts. Jaydon Baker, Sean Haywood, and Buhs had a 1 in the hit column. Wargo collected Gillespie’s only walk in the game.
The Miners fell to Roxana in a nail biter on Thursday, May 9, with a final score of 2-3.
Dawson Lancaster took the loss for Gillespie on the mound. Lancaster put in four innings of work, giving up two runs on two hits, striking out two. Daniel Wolber was the starter on the mound for Gillespie, giving up 1 run on three hits, with two strikeouts. Cooper Harris earned the win for Roxana.
Gillespie was able to muster up a total of 8 hits against Roxana’s pitching staff. Luke Schuckenbrock led the miners at the plate, going 2 for 5. Wargo and Jaydon Baker both went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI. Griffith had a good night at the plate, going 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a base on balls. Bryce Hohnsbehn and Buhs each collected a hit in their efforts.
