Week of August 12
The Miner football team line up in the “soap” scrimmage Friday evening. The scrimmage was a public practice open to anyone that paid their entry fee. The entry fee was powdered gatorade or any type of sport drink. (By Halpin Photography)
Nick Price, quarterback for the Gillespie Mustangs, tosses a pass for the end zone during the 8th grade game Saturday afternoon. The pass fell incomplete, but the team won nonetheless and beat Greenville 22-14.
Ronnie Bertolino fires in a strike during the boys middle school baseball game versus Edwardsville Liberty this week. The team lost 15-0 against Edwardsville, but won their other three games last week versus Raymond, Mt. Olive, and Southwestern. The team is 3-1.
Gillespie High School undergoes some last minute changes before students hit the sidewalks Monday morning. The school is replacing the concrete at the entrance of the building due to poor construction when the concrete was installed. All the work is scheduled to be complete by Monday morning.
Tom Hyde explains to the board members that the new school is 38% complete. When the progress reaches 50%, the school will receive another 45% payment from the state.
The 2012-2013 Gillespie High School volleyball team pose for a quick picture in game attire before practice last week. The first game on the schedule will be played in the Roxana Tournament this Tuesday, August 21.
Tom Hubuert advised the Benld City Council “it is time to work together.” He went on to say there are going to be different opinions, but respect everyone and vote how you feel will benefit the community.
Kaily Frensko hands Lynn Fraelle a check for Build Benld. The check was a donation from the Tootsie Frensko Tournament held in Benld this year.
Kelly Lyons, assistant cheerleading coach, instructs players during a practice Thursday morning. Lyons was appointed assistant coach Monday evening at the school board meeting after the resignation of Tabitha Miller.
Numerous community citizens and business owners turn out for the gambling ordinances discussed during a regular meeting Monday, August 13 in Gillespie. Both ordinances were passed, meaning gambling is allowed, with 6 “yes” votes and 1 “no” vote.
