LAWSUITS

A Carlinville woman is suing a Staunton furniture store for damages in excess of $50,000 for injuries she allegedly sustained in a fall at the store last year. The plaintiff, Shirley Rives, claims she was shopping for furniture about 2:30 p.m., June 8, 2015, at Russell Furniture in Staunton when a saleswoman directed Rives to follow her to a display of love seats in another part of the store. As Rives was following the sales clerk, she claims her toe caught on plastic sheeting that was untucked from a display bed, causing her to fall and sustain a broken femur. The suit alleges Russell Furniture was negligent in failing to maintain the premises in a safe condition, failing to inspect the sales floor to ensure it was free of obstructions, failing to have sufficient personnel and equipment available to properly inspect and maintain the sales floor, and failing to warn Rives about potential obstacles. The suit further alleges negligence in allowing the sales clerk to distract Rives away from the area where she was walking prior to the fall. The suit claims Rives sustained permanent injury resulting in medical bills, pain and mental anguish and an inability to attend to her personal affairs for which she seeks a monetary judgment in excess of $50,000, along with attorney fees and court costs. The suit demands a jury trial.

The estate of an 88-year-old Carlinville man who died as a result of injuries sustained in an Aug. 11 traffic accident in Carlinville is suing the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash for damages in excess of $50,000. Roger P. Johnson, as executor of the estate of Bud Johnson, is the plaintiff suing Janet Boyle, Carlinville, who was driving the automobile with which a motorized scooter Johnson was riding collided. The two-count lawsuit is brought under provisions of the states Survivors Statute and Wrongful Death law. According to the suit, Johnson was riding Yamaha XF50 scooter northbound on North Charles Street as Boyle was driving west on East Main. The suit claims Boyle pulled her vehicle into the path of Johnson’s scooter at the four-way stop intersection, causing the scooter to collide with her vehicle. Johnson reportedly died of his injuries nearly two weeks later on Aug. 22. The suit alleges Boyle was negligent in failing to keep her vehicle under proper control, failing to brake, steer or otherwise maneuver her vehicle to avoid the collision, operating her vehicle at a speed that was greater than reasonable given conditions, failing to keep a proper lookout for Johnson’s vehicle and disobeying traffic signs at the intersection. The suit, which demands a jury trial, seeks a monetary judgment for medical bills, Johnson’s pain and suffering, and for loss of society, grief and sorrow on the part of his survivors.

The plaintiff seeks either possession of the vehicle or a monetary judgement for its $43,425 value, along with court costs and attorney fees. A second count seeks $35,009.66, plus a finance charge of $7.38 per day from Nov. 2 to the date of judgment, representing the amount Woolsey allegedly owed on the loan at the time of the default.

Macoupin County Clerk, Recorder & Elections Office temporarily relocating due to courthouse renovations

Published

on

The Macoupin County Clerk, Recorder, and Elections Office will temporarily relocate across the street to the Macoupin County Voting Center, located at 227 E. First South in Carlinville, beginning Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

The move is necessary to accommodate HVAC system renovations in the Macoupin County Courthouse. The temporary relocation is expected to last until mid-January 2026.

During this time, all regular services — including vital records, recordings, elections, and general clerk functions — will continue to be available at the Voting Center. Office hours and contact information will remain the same.

However, due to limited space during the renovation, public searching and certain in-person services may be restricted. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the many online services offered through the Clerk’s website, including:

  • Searching and ordering vital records
  • Accessing property and land records
  • Viewing election information and forms
  • Checking registration and voter status

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these necessary improvements to the Courthouse,” said Macoupin County Clerk Pete Duncan. “Our goal is to continue serving the public efficiently and safely, whether in person or online.”

Residents can visit www.macoupincountyclerk.com, call 217-854-3214, text 217-439-4499, or email elections@macoupincountyil.gov or recorder@macoupincountyil.gov  for updates, online resources, and additional information.
