Adopt-a-Pet Fundraiser = Huge Success

Published

on

Supporters play heads or tails.

More than 250 people came through the doors of Concordia Hall in Staunton on Saturday, September 17, while dozens of volunteers worked hard throughout the day to get all the food and questions ready.

This was not the first trivia night the Adopt-a-Pet has hosted, actually it is the twelfth year this event has been hosted. Even though some years have not brought in much money, this is the reason why they never give up. This was one of the best turnouts the shelter has ever had, said Lorraine Little, organizer. “We are amazed at the amount of people that showed up,” Lorraine said, “We are really pleased with the turnout – we never had a turnout like this.”

It was part of a fun, successful night of fundraising for the Adopt-a-Pet shelter, which is located outside of Benld. The shelter is operated through donations and numerous fundraisers that are held throughout the year. “This is mainly for operating expenses,” Lorraine said, “People just cannot afford pets and our donations are significantly down. We have more animals coming in than we have going out. People do not realize how much this cost us.”

Heads is the popular pick.

The Adopt-a-Pet shelter is a no-kill shelter that does not require a donation when a pet is dropped off and they spay or neuter each pet that comes their those doors. Many people think the shelter makes money off the pets, but some pets cost the shelter more than what they receive when they sell them, according to Lorraine.

Lorraine shared with us what the shelter witnessed a few weeks back. “A gentleman came in and dropped off 5 puppies,” Lorraine said, “We didn’t ask for a donation of any kind, but the guy proceeded to give us 50 cents! He told us that we will make money off his puppies and he shouldn’t even donate anything. What he doesn’t know is, we have to spay or neuter his pets and then update their shots,” Lorraine explained, “His donation did not help us at all.”

Together, their efforts raised over a thousand of dollars for no-kill shelter. The funds will help with the day to day operations of the shelter.

More than 250 people turned out for the event.

Lorraine Little became a little emotional when she talked about the local response to Adopt-a-Pet fundraiser.

“You sometimes forget how good and giving people really are, and can be. It’s still overwhelming to think about how much support we’ve gotten and are still being given. We are very fortunate that the community keeps us going, it is very expensive to stay in business,” Lorraine shared, “We really appreciate the support of the community.”

To make a donation to the Adopt-a-Pet, please contact Lorraine Little at 217-835-2538. Volunteers are always needed at the numerous fundraisers throughout the year.
