Benld Fire Department Supports Breast Cancer
About 1 in 8 women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2010, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. Also, about 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in men in 2010. Less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases occur in men. In 2011, about 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and about 39,520 women will die from breast cancer. With these astronomical statistics, the Benld Fire Department has started a tee shirt fundraiser where they donate a portion of the profit to “Fight Against Breast Cancer”.
In recent years, there’s been an explosion of life-saving treatment advances against breast cancer, bringing new hope and excitement but still, money for research is still needed and the Benld Fire Department has started a mission. Instead of only one or two options, today there’s an overwhelming menu of treatment choices that fight the complex mix of cells in each individual cancer. The decisions — surgery, then perhaps radiation, hormonal (anti-estrogen) therapy, and/or chemotherapy — can feel overwhelming. Depending on the cancer stage and the treatment options available, the decisions could be a life or death move.
The tee shirts sold by the Fire Department come in 2 colors: navy or pink. Each shirt features a “We’ll Fight the Fight” design. The tee costs $12.50 and the purpose of this fundraiser is to raise breast cancer awareness. To purchase a tee, join the event on Facebook and tell them what you want.
