A 25-year-old man arrested in Bond County and charged with six counts of residential burglary in Madison County may have links to unsolved burglaries in Macoupin County, according to a press release issued this week by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
Bond County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Brett T. Chastain, 25, of Granite City, along with juvenile male, on June 27 near the scene of a day-time burglary in the 800 block of Box Elder Avenue, Greenville, that was interrupted in progress. Madison County deputies noticed similarities between the attempted burglary in Bond County and a number of residential burglaries in Madison County.
In each case, rural homes were entered during the daylight hours, and jewelry, electronics and money were stolen.
Madison County deputies joined in the investigation with Bond County authorities, which resulted in a charge of residential burglary being filed against Chastain on June 30 in Madison County Circuit Court. Chastain was accused of burglarizing a home in the 8700 block of Goshen Road, Edwardsville. Bond was set at $100,000 in that case.
After further investigation, Chastain was linked with six other burglaries in Madison County, stretching from rural Roxana to Alhambra. As of Tuesday, June 19, Chastain was charged with six additional counts of residential burglary. Judge Kyle Napp increased bond for Chastain to $150,000.
The investigation reportedly showed that Chastain was committing the burglaries, in part, to support a heroin addiction. He has a prior arrest record and convictions in Madison County for theft and aggravated battery, according to the press release.
According to the press release, investigators have recovered thousands of dollars worth of suspected stolen property, and are attempting to link the property with possible victims. Some of the property recovered by Madison County Sheriff’s Department personnel has been linked to rural residential burglaries in Macoupin and St. Clair counties.
Rural Macoupin County residents who have been victims of daylight residential burglaries may contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Department at (618) 296-0871 for further information.
