CMH presents questions and answers regarding Renovation Project

Published

on

As was recently announced, Community Memorial Hospital in Staunton is undertaking a large addition, demolition and renovation project that will give the hospital a much more modern look and feel, will bring the hospital in line with HIPAA and other regulations, and will be a great investment for the future of the communities the hospital serves.

As the hospital undertakes this project and seeks to raise $1 million through donations from members of these communities, it is imperative that the public be as well-informed as possible.  Below, you will find the answers to many common questions about the project and why it is needed at this time.  The hospital also welcomes any other questions citizens may have and we invite people to contact the capital campaign coordinator, Lacey Wieseman, with those questions.

Q: Why do we need a hospital renovation and addition?

A: Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) was built in phases, with the original hospital building opening its doors in 1951 and the newest portion being completed in 1974.  The oldest building is declining in critical areas, and the scope of addressing those problems is large.  On the positive side, the 1974 building is very functional and safe; however, we recognize that it requires renovation and modernization as we move towards the future.

In addition, new construction is needed to enlarge and enhance the emergency department and laboratory services.  At the time the hospital was constructed, the word outpatient barely existed, but today the majority of CMH patients come to the hospital for outpatient treatment and then recovers at his/her own home.  This creates entirely different needs as compared to when the hospital was first constructed.  Additionally, the hospital must remain in compliance with state and federal guidelines and regulations to retain the status of a Critical Access Hospital.

Q: What does Critical Access Hospital mean?

A: CMH became a Critical Access Hospital in 2000.  This allowed the hospital to receive special reimbursement for services provided to Medicare patients.  As part of the process for obtaining this designation, the facility was inspected by the State to see if the building complied with the Life Safety Code.  As one might expect, standards today are much different than when our hospital was first constructed and numerous infrastructure concerns were identified.  These concerns ranged from relatively small items to overhauls of entire systems.

Q: What will the renovation and addition project cost?

A: The total estimated cost of the project is $14 million.  That figure includes construction related costs, purchase of land, new equipment, and related financing costs.  Friends of CMH, the hospital foundation, are leading the effort to raise at least $1 million from within the communities we serve.

Q: How much of my contribution or pledge will be used for the new hospital?

A: All of it! This campaign is only for the new hospital project.

Q: Will rates go up because of the project?

A: No, the hospital project will have no direct relationship to an increase of fees/rates, and we will remain priced competitively with similar state and national healthcare facilities.

Q: Does Community Memorial Hospital receive tax support?

A: Community Memorial Hospital is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and does not receive any city or county tax support.

Q: Why won’t the hospital’s charge for services be enough to pay for the new facility?

A: As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, the hospital must underwrite financial losses for many services.  Contribution dollars for this project will be used to help build and expand needed services that otherwise could not be offered; no donations will be used for operational purposes.  In order to begin the renovation project immediately, construction costs for the project will necessitate financial help from the communities we serve.

Q: Will the capital campaign accept matching funds from companies?

A: Yes.  Please contact us for more information.

Q: How do I make a pledge or a gift?

A: Contact capital campaign coordinator, Lacey Wieseman, at 618-635-4232 or lwieseman@stauntonhospital.org

Q: Will Community Memorial Hospital offer any naming opportunities for larger donations?

A: Yes. For gifts of $10,000 or more, numerous naming opportunities exist to perpetuate the memory of a loved one, or to provide a living tribute to an individual, family or organization.  Contact the capital campaign coordinator, Lacey Wieseman, at 618-635-4232 for an updated list of available naming opportunities.
