Claribelle (Otwell) Miller, 91, of Carlinville passed away Sunday morning, September 30, 2012 at the Carlinville Area Hospital.
She was born on October 12, 1920 to the late Carlton VanWinkle and the late Marie (Krueger) Otwell in Carlinville. She graduated from Carlinville High School with the class of 1938. She then graduated from Blackburn College and attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. . She married C. Robert Miller on March 14, 1943 in Carlinville. He preceded her in death on February 13, 2005.
Claribelle started teaching school in a one room schoolhouse, and later taught kindergarten, 4th, and 6th grades for the Carlinville School District Unit #1. She was a member of Macoupin County D.A.R., Macoupin County Alpha Delta Kappa, Carlinville Women’s Club, Carlinville Retired Teachers, United Methodist Women, Macoupin County Home Bureau, Macoupin County 4-H, and Macoupin County Fair where she was in charge of the fine arts department for several years.
Claribelle is survived by 5 loving daughters – Mary Katherine Solberg (husband, Arthur) of Des Plaines, IL, Robin Ann Shuda of Watseka, IL, Suzanne Marie Humphreys (husband, David) of Carlinville, IL, Gail Alden Stump of Sterling, IL, and Rebecca Lynn Glenn of Carlinville, IL; 14 grandchildren – Annelise and Erik Solberg, Curtis Sawyer (Michelle), Cary Sawyer (Michelle), K.C. Strough (Steve), Edward Stump, William Stump (Shari), Katie, Justine, David, and Deirdre Humphreys, Emily Wilson (Alex), Audra Essig (Joseph), and Jacob Glenn; 5 great-grandchildren – Anika Marie Sawyer, Robert Cole Sawyer, Alexander Strough, Mackenzie Strough, and Tarah Patterson; sister – Marguerite Burton of San Bernardino, CA; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter; Kimberly Sawyer, and sister; Winifred Selvo.
Visitation will be held at the Carlinville United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm., with Rev. Robert Sabo officiating.
Burial will take place in the Carlinville City Cemetery beside her husband, Bob. Memorials are suggested to the Macoupin County 4-H or the United Methodist Church.
