Death of Marilyn Ruth Kirkland

Marilyn Ruth Kirkland, 86, of Carlinville, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. Marilyn was born on April 30, 1938, in Springfield, the daughter of Ralph and Jessie Mae (Thomas) Thompson.

She graduated from Carlinville High School with the class of 1955. She married John W. Kirkland on May 4, 1957, at Carlinville United Methodist Church.

Marilyn spent most of her career as a legal secretary, forming valued friendships with coworkers. Throughout her life, she was a member of Home Extension and a longtime member of the Carlinville United Methodist Church. Marilyn enjoyed many activities, such as playing cards with neighborhood card clubs and participating in ladies’ golf league for several years. She was an avid reader and could often be found with a book in hand. Marilyn also loved Illinois basketball in the winter and watching Cardinal baseball with John in the spring. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, where she delighted in spoiling her children and grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was attending her grandchildren’s school activities. Marilyn also loved cooking for her family, who will greatly miss her homemade cherry pies.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son, Gregg Kirkland, and brother, Robert Thompson. She is survived by her son David, and wife Deb of Carlinville, and daughter-in-law, Graci Kirkland of Allen, Texas. Marilyn was a proud grandmother of Blake, Matt, Gregg, Jessie (Miller), and Jaimee (Boston), and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Karen Wills, and husband, Don of Carlinville, sister-in-law, Becky Thompson of Carlinville; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, 9:00 to 11:00 am, with the funeral service at 11:00 am at the Carlinville United Methodist Church, Carlinville. Burial will take place at Bethel Ridge Cemetery near Atwater, with Reverend Bryce Hays officiating.

Obituary of Jason Paul Overby

Jason Paul Overby, 47 of Worden, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born on February 12, 1977, in Town & Country, MO, the son of Ronald and Cynthia (Loebach) Overby.  He married Jenny Engelke on June 14, 2003, and she survives.

He was employed as a Senior IT Manager with the St. Louis County Government Offices and had many cherished colleagues with many friendships built over his career. He was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (Ranken Technical College).

Jason was a man of immense wisdom and humor cherishing every moment spent with his family. He was the most amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend to many.  He was very involved in his children’s lives from being their number one fan to coaching them and teaching them new things to be successful in life. No matter what, he showed his kids how much he loved them and how proud he was of them. 

Jason was an amazing, relaxing, and calming person to be around, and was so uplifting for others who needed a shoulder to lean on.  He touched so many lives and will be forever missed and always warming our hearts with his memories.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny Overby of Worden; two sons, Adam and Matthew Overby of Worden; his parents, Ronald and Cynthia Overby of Edwardsville; one brother, Joshua (MaryBeth) Overby of Shrewsbury, MO; one sister, Jillian Overby of Edwardsville; his mother-in-law, Denise (Keith) Buschmann of Staunton; his father-in-law, Kevin (Angie) Engelke of Edwardsville; and two brothers-in-law, Jeremy and Justin Engelke of Staunton.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton, IL.  Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with Pastor Phil Girardin officiating.

Memorials are suggested to a College Trust Fund being set up for Adam and Matthew. Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary of Richard B. Sereg

Richard B. Sereg, 91 of Gillespie, died at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield on Thursday, January 9, 2025. He was born on January 12, 1933, in Litchfield to Peter E. Sereg and Sylvia C. Berti Sereg.  

He married JoAnn  Wiegand Sereg on August 6, 1955, in Carlinville. She preceded him in death on April 18, 1995. He was retired after having been an industrial chrome plater for Olin Machine Shop.

Richard was a veteran of the US Army after having served from 1953-1955. He was a life member of the VFW Post 4547 of Gillespie. Richard was also a member of the K of C Council 2076 of Gillespie, Bishop McNicholas Assembly Fourth Degree K of C, Gillespie Lions Club, Holy Cross Cemetery Board and a former alderman for the City of Gillespie.  

He is survived by his son, Mark L. Sereg of Gillespie; daughter, Tracy (Terry) Soots of Gillespie; granddaughter, Abby (Mark) Enslow; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Brycen, and Braxtyn; and sister, Mary Jane Kalvin of Gillespie.  

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, spouse, and sister, Sylvia Denham.  

Friends may call on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at SS Simon & Jude Church in Gillespie from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. Funeral mass will be on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 12:00 pm at SS Simon & Jude Church in Gillespie. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Gillespie.  

Memorials are suggested to Gillespie Public Library or Holy Cross Cemetery in Gillespie.  Kravanya Funeral Home, Gillespie, IL is in charge of the arrangements.

Obituary of Eugene Lee Frizzo

Eugene Lee Frizzo, 85 of Kirkwood, MO, a former Staunton resident, passed away at 7:45 AM on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Brooking Place of Chesterfield, MO. He was born on January 15, 1939, in Staunton the son of the late Joseph and Ruby Delores “Dee” (Sherfy) Frizzo. 

He married Lanida D. Jacobs on June 16, 1962, at First United Methodist Church in Staunton and she passed away on January 27, 2022. Gene was a retired Vice President with Roosevelt Bank, an Army veteran, and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Alton. He was also active in the Rotary Club and was a past member of the Madison County Board and the Alton School Board.

He is survived by one daughter, Lainee Frizzo (husband Joshua Wallace); one grandson, Keegan Forrest; and one sister, JoAnn Gibbs.

The family will greet friends from 12 noon to 3 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimers’ Association.
