Myrtle M. Black, 94, of Carlinville passed away Sunday evening, October 13, 2013, at Friendship Nursing Home in Carlinville. Myrtle was born September 14, 1919, at Litchfield Hospital and was the daughter of the late Joseph Elmer and Cleo Elena (Bishop) Carriker.
Myrtle married Aubrey Black on May 14, 1944 at the Raymond Methodist Church. Her husband preceded her in death on April 17, 1980. Myrtle graduated from Raymond High School, class of 1939, she then received her Teaching Certificate from Lincoln College.
Myrtle taught in one-room schoolhouses near Raymond, IL until her marriage to Aubrey. In 1970 Myrtle returned to teaching and taught the Special Education classes for Carlinville and Litchfield School districts for 12 years until she later retired.
Myrtle was a lifetime member of the United Methodist church and in addition to church activities she enjoyed flower gardening, quilting, card games, and jigsaw puzzles.
Surviving are three sons; Gerald Black of Raymond, IL,John Black of Carlinville,IL and David (wife Mary) of Jerseyville, IL; one brother; William Carriker of Carlinville, IL, one sister; Harriet (husband William) Crawford of Florida, five grandchildren; Danielle (husband Shawn) Schroeder of Jerseyville, IL, Sarah (husband Lee) LoBue of Carlinville, IL, Lori Haun, Lisa Thompson, and Kris Hauhe; 3 great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, and 1 step great great granddaughter.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband; Aubrey C. Black, parents; Joseph Carriker and Cleo (Bishop) Carriker, 5 brothers; Joseph Carriker, Charles Carriker, Phillip Carriker, Elmer Carriker and Kenneth Carriker; and 2 sisters; Alberta Johnston and Rachel Carriker.
Visitation is Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville.
Funeral Services will take place at 10:00 am on Wednesday,October 16, 2013 at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home.
Burial will take place in Bethel Ridge Cemetery in Atwater following the funeral service.
Memorials may be made to The Carlinville United Methodist Church or to the Macoupin Center for the Developmentally Disabled.
Davis Anderson Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements.
