Wanda Marion McCollom, age 89, formerly of Carlinville, died on September 23, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Wanda was born in Carlinville on July 27, 1924 to the parents Marion and Harriet (Jones) Chism. She grew up in Carlinville, graduating from Carlinville High School in 1942.
She Married Homer “Roe” L. McCollom of Hettick, Illinois on June 3, 1942. He preceded her in death in September of 1989.
Upon Roe’s discharge from the U.S. Navy, he began his career in construction which took them to St. Louis, Missouri, Panama Canal, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, Security, Colorado, Las Vegas, Nevada, Oceanside, California, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1968, they returned to Las Vegas where they settled for the rest of their lives. Wanda embraced each move as a new adventure and fresh start.
Over the years they made many, many lifelong friends in each place they lived. These friends and families often traveled long distances to visit Wanda and Roe. Wanda was never happier than when she entertained them around her kitchen table.
Wanda often expressed her appreciation for all the support she received over the last few years from her grandson Sean, Kathy and Ralph Gonzalez, and Jeanette and Chuck Grove.
She is survived by her daughter Lesley Hoerl (husband Don) of Denver, Colorado, her grandchildren Kristen Hoerl (husband Casey Kelly) of Indianapolis, Indiana, Kent Hoerl (wife Samatha) of Denver, Colorado, Sean and Erin McCollom of Las Vegas, Nevada, and her great granddaughter Elise Hoerl of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are her brother Harry Chism of Alton, Illinois, her sister Juanita Formea (husband Tom) of Springfield, Illinois, and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, Gary McCollom, son, Douglas McCollom, and her brother, Earl “Bud” Chism.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 14th at the Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville. Rev. Robert Taylor will officiate.
Burial will be in Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery in Carlinville.
