District 7 planning to save High School Gym
All damage and contents covered under insurance
Cleanup at the Gillespie High School Gym began on Tuesday, June 4 when crews started demolishing the front of the gym and building a temporary wall to shelter the gym from the storms this weekend.
Superintendent Paul Skeans held a brief conference Monday evening following the special board meeting to update the media and school board members of the district’s plan following Friday’s tornado. The EF2 formed over the high school football field, according to the National Weather Service, and caused upwards of $2 million worth of damage to the CUSD #7 campus.
The front of the gymnasium was destroyed by winds reaching 120 mph, but Skeans explained the structural beams heading north and south inside the gym are “still intact.” He went on to add the barrel roof is also intact other than the front of the building. “They are going to try to demolish the front of the building, but protect the wood floor and other items,” Skeans added. “In my opinion, I think the gym is going to be salvageable.”
All of the damage to the district campus will be covered by insurance. “Everything will be covered by property insurance, wind/storm insurance, and so forth,” Skeans proclaimed. “We only have to pay our deductible.” The administration staff confirmed the deductible to be paid for this claim is $1,000.
Superintendent Skeans explained the district is salvaging any and all brick from the front of the school and no bricks will be available for sale at this point. “Those colors are not even made anymore,” Skeans said. “We are going to try to reuse as much as we can because of the colors.”

Once the front of the gym is demolished, structural engineers will revisit the gym and make a second verdict whether the building is still structurally sound or is not. The gym floor has been covered by paper, .75” layer of plywood, and then a rubber layer over the plywood so vehicles can travel in and out of the building.
The back of the gymnasium will have to be completely rebuilt, Skeans said. “The art studio will have to be rebuilt,” he explained. “We are still assessing damage. I could come back tomorrow and tell you we have more damage.” Equipment inside the tv studio has been moved to a secure location. Some of the equipment has sustained water damage, but the district will test all of the equipment to see if it is usable. “They usually replace it if it has water damage,” Skeans added.
Administration also discovered some damage at the bus garage on Monday, June 3. There were a few buses that had the windows blown out of them and the doors bent. All of the vehicles damaged will be repaired and covered under insurance.
Right now, crews are working on building a temporary wall inside the building to protect against the storms coming in later this week. “Fans will be brought back in the gym this week as well to make sure the humidity does not become a factor on the gym floor,” Skeans explained. “Once the wall is built, there will be a reconstruction phase to take the gym back to its original structure.”
However, the gymnasium built in 1928 has to be built to code for 2013 which requires steel beams in the walls rather than clay brick. A clean-up crew has been established and started cleaning up the building on Tuesday, June 4, but nothing can be utilized inside the building at this point. The football program will have to meet outside for workouts until the district reaches an agreement with a local gym, or another city’s gym, and summer school sessions are meeting the elementary pods because the fire alarms are not reset yet. Skeans explained four area schools have offered their facilities to district 7.
As far as the concession stand at the Schmidt Complex, insurance will cover that as well. The cleanup crew will sort through the contents from the concession stand and organize them so the insurance company can inspect whether anything is still able to be used or not. The concession stand will have to be rebuilt to code also.
