The first annual charity fundraiser to benefit Fight the Fight was held at the Gillespie Civic Center on Saturday and drew over 500 people while raising over $15,000 with $1,728 coming from a golf tournament held by Farmers Insurance Agent Adam Tallman.
“Being the first large, live event we have ever put on, it exceeded my expectations in every way,” Founder Pete Visintin Jr. said in a press release. “The event went very smooth thanks to the careful planning and hard work by over 25 volunteers including our board of directors.”
Ticket sales for the event were completely sold out
Visintin said he’s happy to hear that the guests had a fun night. Ticket sales for the event were completely sold out after the charity organization presold 400 tickets, then sold another 30 tickets at the door Saturday evening.
Several of Fight the Fight’s past and future donation recipients and their family members were in attendance for the first annual event, and Visintin was grateful to see them. “Liz [Visintin’s wife] and I got to meet some of our past and future donation recipients in person,” he added. “And, that’s the reason Fight the Fight was started – to help people who need a little help. The money raised from the event will be donated to future recipients over the course of the next year.”
Visintin reminded us that the 501(c)3 charity organization donates money to individuals who incur large medical related expenses. “Every dollar counts big time and is put to maximum use,” he wrote. “Since inception in 2012, we have donated to 58 individuals and their families totaling over $52,000 – and that rises every day.”
The event lasted approximately five hours after getting underway at 5 p.m. Fireproof band of the First United Methodist Church of Gillespie provided a live Christian performance from the time doors opened at 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., then Visintin and wife, Liz, welcomed the crowd to the first annual event and shared more about why he started the charity – which was because doctors found two malignant and aggressive tumors in his father’s brain in 2012 when his father was 62 years old, in good health and three weeks into retirement.

The life-changing event for his family made Visintin realize that people who fall into situations like his father’s need financial help and support from many people. His father, who was in attendance Saturday, had surgery to remove both tumors back in 2012 and is in good health to this day despite routine scans and check-ups.

Following his address, guests enjoyed a catered meal and free beer while Mike Bertagnolli entertained the guests with music. Three sections of silent auction items closed at various times throughout the evening and bigger items were sold through card raffles and a live auction – which was a highlight of the evening for Visintin.
Many different auction items sold for several hundred dollars, but the main auction item of the evening was an autographed Stan Musial print that included a certificate of authenticity that was also signed by Musial. That bidding war for that piece involved a handful of people, but was finally won by Peyton Bernot with a bid price of $750.
Other highlights of the evening for Visintin included the check presentation from Farmers Insurance Agent Adam Tallman which totaled $1,728 from the golf tournament held during the day on Saturday, meeting the past and future donation recipients and seeing all the hard work and planning come together.
“This will definitely be an annual event and there are already ideas spinning in my head how we can improve it,” he closed. “We appreciate the volunteers and staff who put the event together and all of the event sponsors. Every dollar is going to make a positive difference in people’s lives.”
