Frieda Craine: Heritage Health Spotlight
“I am enjoying life!”
This month’s resident spotlight at Heritage Health is Frieda Craine. After transferring from a different nursing home, the 89 year old youngster describes Heritage Health as the “most friendliest people around.” After living at Heritage Health for nearly six months, Frieda happily calls it her home.
Frieda is not from around here and has only been a familiar face in the area for less than a year. She was born in Rolla, Missouri where she was one of three children of two loving parents. Her sister, Martha, and her brother, Harold both grew up along side her. Both of her parents were farmers and as Frieda did not like to farm, she loved that her parents were always home with her.
“I always said I was too young,” Frieda said after she was asked if she liked to work on the farm, “I liked to go to school and play with my friends.” Before she started school, her father traveled with his job and she got to go with her parents to different places. According to her, he worked with the county and had to go to different places time to time.
When she reached five years old, traveling was long gone and she focused on her school work. “I could not travel,” Frieda explained, “I had to go to school every day!” She stayed enrolled in school until she received her diploma and graduated.
Frieda loved the home economics classes and did not care much for the harder subjects. High school is where she picked up sewing and sewing got her through her “pleasant life.” According to her, she loved to sew and it was a great trade to learn at the time. “I was very good at it,” she noted, “I could whip up a dress or something else in no time at all.” Her graduating class was fairly large, but was always fun to be around.
Good thing Frieda paid attention in school because that is where she found her life partner. Herple Craine was the lucky gentleman. Herple and Frieda were both newly grads, but Herple landed a job almost immediately after high school with a geological survey group. For the second time in her life, Frieda got to travel all over the central area. The pair traveled so often that they ended up purchasing a RV and were forced to live out of that.
“It was ideal for us,” Frieda said of the RV, “It was convenient and easy. We always had our own place to live.” When her husband went off to work, Frieda did the same. She worked where ever they were assigned at the closest dress shop. Other than that, she passed on the trade she learned in high school and taught sewing to other people.
The happy couple finally settled down back in her hometown: Rolla, Missouri. Frieda landed a job at Singer Sewing Company and worked at a dress shop on the side. “I have always been involved in sewing,” Frieda said with a big grin on her face, “Until the last few years, it is too nerve-wracking for me.”
Frieda loved to sew, but it was not just the idea of sewing that sparked her interest. It was the idea that she could make her own clothes. While she was in Rolla, Frieda got acquainted with the women soldiers at Fort Lindenwood and would take her clothing she made out there. “I would sell more out there to them than they sold in the store,” Frieda laughed, “I have always been involved in sewing.”
Between all the money making and endless hours of sewing, Frieda and her husband were able to have one child together. Their single son is retired and living in Northern Illinois. Their son went on to have three children and blessed Frieda with three grandchildren: Gregg, who visits Frieda nearly every day, Jeff, and Brian, who works for the mine workers.
It was not all about work though she explained; they had a lot of fun together after their child was grown. They had a deep love for traveling. “We went as far North as Minnesota and as far South as Florida,” Frieda noted.
According to Frieda, she loved the beach and loved to lay out. The pair spent majority of their travels at the beach as she said Daytona Beach was her favorite. She liked to visit the beach and could visit every day she said, but she snd her husband chose not to live in the area though. “It is not much of a life to work,” Frieda went on to say.
Frieda did go on to clarify that she did not lay out all day. “You cannot do that, you get burned!” When she wasn’t kicked back lying in the sand, she was in the pool or having a picnic. Her and her husband loved to pack picnic lunches and have lunch on the beach. They even had beach parties with Herple’s coworkers and each couple brought a different covered dish. “It was a good time, oh yes.”
Other than the beach life, Frieda and Herple loved to golf. Frieda even mentioned that her husband was “very good” at the game of golf. The couple joined a country-club when they retired and spent nearly every day on the fairways. “I thought I was good,” she said, “And I could hold my own.” Frieda did even whisper that she even beat him time to time, but she did say he probably wouldn’t say that same.
“I am enjoying life,” Frieda closed, “Especially since I can see my grandson.” If she had to live in a nursing home, she would choose Heritage Health because “this one is the best.” The people are very friendly to her and there is a different activity every day to keep her involved and social with other residents at Heritage Health.
“I love living here.”
