The communities of Gillespie and Benld proclaimed June 17-21 Small Business Week during their monthly council meetings on June 10th. “This is actual a national event by the Small Business Administration,” MEDP marketing specialist Courtney Wood explained. Both councils approved the proclamation without any objections.
Every year Small Business Week honors the accomplishments and contributions of America’s small business owners. Macoupin County is having their own celebration of sorts during this national week long holiday as MEDP has planned the Progressive Retailing Day on Thursday, June 20.
The event will start at 9am and come to a close at 5pm. “We promote women to shop and dine their way through the county,” Wood explained. Each MEDP community has a host location where citizens throughout the county will stop. In Gillespie, the host location is The Giving Tree and in Benld, the host location is at Fireside Eye Care.
There will be multiple stops along the way throughout Macoupin County whether it is boutiques, gift shops, tea rooms, or other eateries. “Everyone will get coupons, specials, and samples in their goody bag,” Wood added. She went on to explain this is just one initiative MEDP encourages communities to shop their own town first.
United Community Bank donated $250 worth of VISA gift cards in ten dollar increments to be randomly dispersed in the goody bags as well. “Small businesses have been the backbone in both Gillespie and Benld,” Wood read from the proclamation. “25% of Macoupin County’s workforce is employed by small businesses.”
Wood went on to add the small business owners do their best to contribute to the community and this is the councils’ way to recognize their efforts and ingenuity. “The small businesses play a vital role in building a more prosperous future for our county,” Wood closed.
Small Business Week was first established in 1963 by the president and has been carried out since then. The United States Small Business Administration says more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business and they create two out of every three new jobs in the United State each year.
