The Gillespie High School football team opened the 2015 season seeking their first victory since beating Carmi in November of 2013 in the second round of the IHSA playoffs, and they were able to accomplish the feat last Friday with a 28-6 victory over Vandalia.
The Miners, equipped with Don Dobrino as hall-of-fame head coach, opened their second drive of the game with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tate Wargo to Bryce McKinney to secure a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The early touchdown fired up the home half of the field at the Schmidt Complex as hundreds of people packed into the complex excited about the upcoming season.
Once Gillespie started leading, they never struggled. The Miners defense came up with a trifecta for the team after the Miners scored their first touchdown: A forced punt. A forced fumble and recovery. And an interception, recorded by Nick Wyatt.

Tate Wargo helped his cause as quarterback by returning Vandalia’s punt for a touchdown, giving Gillespie a 12-0 lead late in the first quarter. After Wyatt’s interception midway through the second quarter, Gillespie converted on the offensive end for another touchdown – an eight yard rushing touchdown by McKinney for an 18-0 lead.
The Miners weren’t done scoring in the first half just yet. They forced a Vandalia fumble with 2 minutes remaining before halftime for one last offensive possession. After a handful of plays and 80 seconds that rolled off the game clock, fans saw a sight they haven’t seen in almost a decade – the Miners lining up to kick a field goal.
Gillespie took a 21-0 lead after the special team led by kicker Chandler McDaniel capped the first half scoring with a 36-yard field goal.
After halftime, Vandalia opened the third quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass on their first drive, cutting the Miners lead to 21-6. Gillespie’s offense struggled on their next two drives and turned the ball over on downs twice before Bobby Carr scored the team’s last touchdown of the game with 9:32 remaining in the game on a 32-yard rush. After McDaniel’s successful extra-point attempt, Gillespie secured a 28-6 lead – a lead they would hold until the end of the matchup.
Gillespie’s defense did a successful job of slowing their opponent’s offense and accelerating the team’s offense by shutting Vandalia down on 11 of their 12 drives including two interceptions and three fumbles. Alex Myers, Bobby Carr and Tanner King equally led the defense with six tackles a piece.
Tate Wargo led the offense with 149 passing yards, one passing touchdown and one punt return. Bryce McKinney ended the game with one rushing touchdown, one receiving touchdown and a combined 141 yards on the offensive end. Bobby Carr had the team’s fourth touchdown and led the team in rushing yards with 122.
UPCOMING GAMES: Gillespie travels to Litchfield tonight, September 4, for a 7 p.m. kickoff and then will travel to Pana on September 11.
