Gillespie represented in All-Star Basketball Classic this weekend

Gillespie High School will be well represented this Sunday at the 14th annual Carlinville Rotary Club/Country Financial All-Star Basketball Classic where 54 senior boys and girls basketball players will meet at Carlinville High School for some friendly postseason competition.

Admission is $6 with children 10 and under admitted free. A girls 3-point shootout starts Sunday’s event at 4 p.m. followed by the girls game at 4:30. The boys 3-point shootout is tentatively scheduled for 6:15 with the boys game starting at 6:45. A slam-dunk contest will be held at halftime of the boys game.

BOYS GAME

Gillespie boys’ head coach Casey Sholtis has the honor of coaching the West team with three familiar faces on his roster – Eli Fox, Evan Price and Colin Tieman. Joining the Gillespie trio on the West team are Joe Bates and Xavier Dunlap of Carlinville; Luke Gillingham and Cole Brannan of Carrollton; Blake Marks of East Alton-Wood River; Austin Bishop and Connor Shade of Greenfield; Zac Ridenour and Drake Kanallakan of Jerseyville; Chase Bushnell of North Greene; Trace Gentry of Roxana; and Zack Seymour of Southwestern.

The representatives of Gillespie and the West team will face the East All-Stars who will be coached by Litchfield’s Drew Logan. The East team’s lineup includes David Holden of Greenville; Bryan Graham and A.J. Thomas of Raymond Lincolnwood; Conner Simmons, Cooper Scharf and Josh Franke of Litchfield; Brennan White and Cooper Etter of North Mac; Garrett Gillette and Jordan Hampton of Pawnee; and Corey Scroggins and Austin Gusewelle of Staunton.

GIRLS GAME

GHS is also represented in the girls division with Bailey Jarman and Jessica Robbins suiting up for the West All-Stars who are going to be coached by Southwestern’s Steve Wooley. Joining Jarman and Robbins are Marley Schmidt of Carlinville; Elizabeth Hall of Greenfield; Lydia Wall and Sydney Wyatt of South County; Karlie Green, Maddy Greeling, Erin Laubscher and Kelsey Rhodes of Southwestern; and Darci Brannan, Destyne Powell and Makendra Jennings of White Hall North Greene.

The girls East All-Stars are coached by Litchfield’s Rob Corso and include Emma Brown of Auburn; Brianna Wade, Briana VanKleef and Madison Funneman of Greenville; Lindsey Storm, Maddy Reck and Carly Cameron of Hillsboro; Anna Thomack, Abby Frerichs and Helen Vargo of Litchfield; Karmyn Cox, Autumn Boliard and Abbi Ruppert of Nokomis; and Reaghan Vaughn of Pana.

Gillespie softball clutches a win against Waterloo and falls to Freeburg

The Gillespie High School softball team defeated the Waterloo Bulldogs with a walk-off single from Sadie Sholtis in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday, April 13. 

Lauren Bertagnolli put Gillespie on the board during the first inning on a fielder’s choice, scoring one run.

Emma Gipson went the distance and earned the win, striking out 10 batters, giving up four runs on nine hits. Gipson walked just two batters in the game. Mia Miller took the loss in the circle for Waterloo. 

Gillespie tallied a total of eight hits in the victory. Ava Parish went 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot, scoring one run. Sadie Sholtis was surehanded at the plate, going 2 for 3 with one run scored, one RBI, and a walk. Bertagnolli, Addi Cox, Delaney Taylor, and Gipson all placed one in the hit column in the victory. 

Following their win against Waterloo, Gillespie took a devastating 13-to-3 loss against the Freeburg Midgets. Unfortunately, Gillespie couldn’t match the bats of Freeburg. 

Paxton Reid took the loss in the circle for Gillespie, putting in three and one-third innings of work. Reid gave up five runs on six hits, striking out one batter in their efforts. Aubrey Waeltz earned the win for Freeburg, giving up only three runs on six hits over five innings of work. 

Hits were hard to come by for Gillespie, with just a handful of players finding their way into the hit column. Parish, Bertagnolli, Gipson, Macie Wright, Cox, and Amari Vickery had one hit each. Wright drove in two runs, and Vickery drove in one. 

Sadie Sholtis had a good eye at the plate, drawing two walks and scoring one run. Schuckenbrock also had a walk in their efforts.

Four more wins on the season for the Gillespie softball team

Gillespie High School softball stepped on the field against the Centralia Annies on Saturday, April 6, taking home a 12 to 0 win.

Emma Gipson picked up the win in the circle, striking out 11 batters and allowing only one hit through five innings of work. Hits were not hard to come by for Gillespie, with a total of 11 hits in the game.

Ava Parish was hot in the leadoff spot, going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Macie Wright went 2 for 3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Sadie Sholtis also had a great showing, going 2 for 4, with 3 RBIs and one run plated. Macie Wright went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI in the game. Lauren Bertagnolli, Addi Cox, Laci Schuckenbrock, and Delaney Taylor all had a hit throughout the game. Jocelyn Hossler took the loss for Centralia, allowing five runs on five hits.

Gipson had another dominant showing in the circle on Monday, April 8, against the Collinsville Kahoks. Gillespie took the 3-1 win behind Gipson, who allowed only three hits with one run, striking out 15 batters in the game.

Parish and Bertagnolli were a commanding duo at the plate, collecting two hits each in the victory. Gipson, Wright, and Taylor each had a one in the hit column. Wright collected an RBI and a walk in the game. Ali Vieluf took the loss in the circle for Collinsville.

Gillespie faced off against Vandalia on Tuesday, April 9, taking a 17-to-1 win. Gipson put in four innings of work for the win as the starting pitcher, giving up two hits, one run and striking out eight.

Paxton Reid had a stellar night at the plate, going 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs and one run scored. Parish, Wright, Schuckenbrock, Taylor, and Cox all had a multi-hit game in their winning efforts. Wright homered to center field. Gipson put a 1 in the hit column on the night with a triple. M. McCall took the loss in the circle for Vandalia, giving up 17 runs on 14 hits.

Gillespie ended their week with a 20-to-4 win against the Dupo Tigers. Amari Vickery had a hot night at the plate, going 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Schuckenbrock went 2 for 4 in the game with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs. Reid also had a home run and five RBIs in the victory.

Parish, Cox, and Ava Rakers all put up multiple hits throughout the game. Sholtis, Taylor, and Ava Segerra each had a one in the hit column. Kaitlynn Townsend took the loss for Dupo, allowing 20 runs on 16 hits.

Gillespie will take the field against Staunton this Friday.

The Gillespie Miners pull two wins on a shutout and a close call

The Gillespie Miners baseball team took home a 7-0 win against Litchfield/Mt. Olive Panthers on Friday, April 5. 

The Miners took the lead in the first inning of play, plating five runs. Bryce Buhs took the win on the stump for Gillespie, giving up no hits and no runs, walking three. Buhs had nine strikeouts in the victory. 

Colin Griffith had a hot bat this game, going 3 for 4 and driving in one run. Luke Schuckenbrock went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and one run scored. Jesse Berry also collected two hits on the evening for Gillespie. Tristen Wargo, Bryce Hohnsbehn, Jack Kaylor, and Jaydon Baker each produced a hit in their winning efforts. Saathoff took the loss for Litchfield/Mt. Olive on the mound.

The Miners added another win to the season this weekend with an 11-to-9 win in a last-minute nail-biter over the Alton Redbirds on Saturday, April 6.

Gillespie fell behind Alton in the first inning after a hit by pitch drove in a run. The Miners were quickly able to bounce back and take the lead in the top of the second after Sean Haywood and Kaylor both singled and later scored. 

We saw a tremendous amount of lead changes throughout the game until the Miners built a 6-run lead in the seventh inning. The miners racked up a total of 13 hits in the victory. 

Schuckenbrock was on fire at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Wargo, Buhs, and Griffith each picked up multiple hits in the game. Berry got in on the scoring efforts, driving in three runs. Hohnsbehn, Kaylor, and Berry had one hit each. 

Daniel Wolber started on the mound for the Miners, giving up three runs on one hit. Wargo picked up the win for Gillespie in a relief appearance, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out four, and walking two batters.

The bullpen put in work this game for Gillespie, as we saw an appearance from Schuckenbrock and Brody Shaw as well. Rathgeb took the loss on the mound for Alton, allowing four runs on five hits. 

The Gillespie Miners baseball team will face off against Vandalia this coming Tuesday.
