Addison Bryant hurled ten strikeouts in all seven innings of work as the Gillespie Miners advanced past Litchfield 7-0 on Tuesday evening in the regional semi-finals. Gillespie will compete for the regional championship on Saturday.
Bryant, a sophomore, gave up only three hits for head coach Michelle Smith while throwing a shutout and recording no walks.
Gillespie scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead and then didn’t score again until the fourth where they added one run for a 3-0 lead. The Miners continued the run production in the fifth and sixth innings where they added two runs in each inning against Litchfield’s Tessa Steffens for the 7-0 victory.
[pullquote]Gillespie has outscored their opponents 98 runs to 8 in 12 games[/pullquote]While leading the team from the pitching rubber, Bryant carried the team on the offensive end as well after recording the only extra base hit of the team’s three hits in the contest.
Her hit was a convincing one – a homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning for a pair of RBIs. Lizzy Nance and Beth Fields had the team’s other two hits while Ally Clay, Mackenzie Kasarda and Beth Fields each had one RBI for the team.
The Miners were riding an 11-game winning streak after the victory on Tuesday, but conference rival Piasa snapped the win streak Thursday evening with a 1-0 victory in a regular season game that was postponed last week. Before Thursday, the team’s last loss was suffered to Staunton more than one month ago on April 20 and since then, Gillespie has outscored their opponents 98 runs to 8 in their last 12 games. The Miners have only allowed one run to score in the team’s last five contests.
“Refocus for Saturday’s regional championship,” Smith wrote Thursday evening after the team’s first loss in 12 games. “We’ve got a championship to bring home!” Gillespie will be contesting for their 12th regional title in school history and head coach Michelle Smith’s sixth regional title since she took over the team in 2005. The Miners’ last regional title was won in 2012.
Gillespie (15-8) will face the winner of North Mac and Carlinville, which will be played tonight at 4:30 p.m. after being postponed on Wednesday and Thursday because of the field conditions. First pitch for the regional championship is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23 at Loveless Park in Carlinville.
