Gillespie Miners softball team 2015 Regional Champions
The Gillespie Miners softball team knocked off North Mac Saturday morning in the Carlinville Class 2A Regional Championship to win the team’s first postseason title since 2012.
“I think we had a great attitude coming in and we had a good momentum,” head coach Michelle Smith said of Saturday’s performance. “Making adjustments sooner at the plate was the key for us today. Addy has been throwing well for us for some time now.”
Sophomore pitcher Addison Bryant led the team on the rubber with her second consecutive game with 17 strikeouts. While throwing a perfect game, she also had no walks and held the North Mac Panthers hitless through seven innings of play while Gillespie’s defense had an error-free performance in the championship.

Gillespie extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning to a 2-0 lead after Sydney Henrichs opened the inning with a double to left field. After Bette Hammann sacrificed Henrichs to third, Abby Munos scored Henrichs on an infield bunt.
The Miners added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Beth Fields hit a fly to the outfield scoring Kasarda who reached on a single to left field. Fields had the only RBI for Gillespie while Bryant, Kasarda, Fields and Henrichs each posted one hit.
“We are going to make sure our defense executes and we have to continue to make adjustments at the plate,” Smith said as the team enters sectionals tomorrow. “We have to get [Bryant] some runs and offense because she has been doing her job on defense. We have to play heads-up and take chances when we have them.”
Gillespie advances to the Williamsville sectional where they will face the Williamsville Bullets (25-6) Wednesday afternoon in the Class 2A Sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. The winner of tomorrow’s game advances to the sectional championship that will be played on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m.
The Miners are very young this season with only one senior on this year’s roster with an overall 16-8 record. Despite starting the season off with five losses, Bryant and the team roared back and posted ten consecutive victories.
