A 32-year-old Granite City woman was convicted of first-degree murder by a Macoupin County jury in August and now has been sentenced to 46 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by the Honorable Joshua Meyer.
The conviction and sentencing stems from a 2015 home invasion in Woodburn that left 34-year-old Cody Adams dead. At the sentencing hearing, Macoupin County State’s Attorney Jordan Garrison said testimony was given by the lead investigator from Illinois State Police and a sheriff’s deputy.
“I keep seeing this contrast. A peaceful home on New Year’s Eve, a mom and dad asleep, the kids at a church lock in down the street and Cody playing video games. It looked like many homes in Macoupin County,” Judge Meyer said to Hutson. “Then I see the home after what happened. None of this had to happen but it did because of you.”
Chancey Hutson was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder after deliberation of less than two hours. Macoupin County State’s Attorney Jordan Garrison said the guilty verdicts are the first guilty verdicts for first-degree murder charges in the county since the 1980s.
The home invasion took place on January 1, 2015, in Woodburn. The case went cold for almost two and one half years before charges were filed in 2019 by former State’s Attorney Jennifer Watson who charged both Hutson and William Kavanaugh, 37 of Edwardsville, with three counts of first-degree murder, home invasion, aggravated battery, and residential burglary.
Garrison said the pair went to the home in the early morning hours to steal merchandise and Adams was shot while he tried to fight off the burglarers. During the struggle, Hutson’s mask was removed however the pair fleed and weren’t able to be identified until a DNA database matched Hutson’s DNA to the DNA found on the mask.
“Cody Adams spent the last moments of his life fighting off an intruder to protect his mother and his father, “Garrison said.

The Macoupin County Clerk, Recorder, and Elections Office will temporarily relocate across the street to the Macoupin County Voting Center, located at 227 E. First South in Carlinville, beginning Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
The move is necessary to accommodate HVAC system renovations in the Macoupin County Courthouse. The temporary relocation is expected to last until mid-January 2026.
During this time, all regular services — including vital records, recordings, elections, and general clerk functions — will continue to be available at the Voting Center. Office hours and contact information will remain the same.
However, due to limited space during the renovation, public searching and certain in-person services may be restricted. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the many online services offered through the Clerk’s website, including:
Searching and ordering vital records
Accessing property and land records
Viewing election information and forms
Checking registration and voter status
“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these necessary improvements to the Courthouse,” said Macoupin County Clerk Pete Duncan. “Our goal is to continue serving the public efficiently and safely, whether in person or online.”
