The Gillespie Lady Miners will play for third place in the Macoupin County Tournament versus Mt. Olive this Saturday, January 24, at 3 p.m. despite being ranked 5th overall in the tournament. Gillespie split their pair of pool play games with a loss to Southwestern and a victory over Bunker Hill.
The Miners were in the same scenario less than a month ago after facing off against Nokomis for the third place game in the Carlinville Holiday Tournament, but the team struggled against the Redskins’ zone defense and came up short, 36-49. The Lady Miners are off to a 2-5 start in 2015 and 5-15 overall for the season.
Gillespie 30, Southwestern 54
Southwestern (1) gave the Lady Miners (5) their first and only loss in the Macoupin County Tournament last Saturday, January 17, on the opening day of the tournament. Ashlyn Ringhausen led the Piasa Birds with 17 points as the Birds led 11-6 after the first quarter and 24-13 by halftime.
Gillespie struggled to score against Piasa’s defense and failed to convert on the free throw line as the team combined to make 9 of 18 attempts. After Southwestern outscored Gillespie 23-6 in the third quarter, the Miners partially closed the deficit in the fourth quarter outscoring Piasa 11-7 and fell 30-54 in the matchup.
The Lady Miners point leader, Amanda Schmidt, led the team with 9 points in the match-up. Bailey Jarman followed with six. Karli Carr led the team in steals with three and Piage Niemeyer led the team in rebounds with 10.
Gillespie 41, Bunker Hill 38
Gillespie (5) edged out another close victory over Bunker Hill (4) after facing the team for the third time this season, 41-38. The Lady Miners scored just four points in the first and third quarters, but made up for their offensive woes in the second and fourth quarters. After the game was knotted 15-15 at halftime, Gillespie fell behind 28-19 by the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Miners rallied back outscoring Bunker Hill 22-10 in the fourth quarter to get the victory. Paige Niemeyer helped the team with six points in the fourth quarter while Amanda Schmidt and Karli Carr posted five points each. Freshman Karli Carr led Gillespie’s scorers with 15 points while Amanda Schmidt followed with 11.
