“Who Does That?” I’ve heard this phrase used a lot lately, most of the time in a very good way, describing the community we live in. Six months ago, the last place I ever expected to be was sitting in a waiting room on a Friday afternoon at Siteman Center. Six months ago, I didn’t know what Siteman Center was and cancer was a horrible disease that didn’t really affect me. But, I talk to people in this place, and I tell them about home and all the great things we have in this small community.
I tell them about Fight The Fight, Miles For Michael, Team Tammy, H.E.I.D.I and the J.O.E.Y foundation. People everywhere, from all over the country, who bought shirts from FTF, always have the same response. “Who does that? We are so blessed to have the community we live in. We are helping those in need and working to make this a better place to live for our families.
I personally see first-hand from Build Benld, The Italian American Club, Our Churches, Mason’s, Libraries and Great School Organizations, just to name a few, what can be done if you put unselfish actions to work.
The three great loves of my life are God, family and home. The upcoming election unfortunately affects all of the above for me. Nobody is a bigger “Home Boy” than me. So, I plan on voting for community and those who make home better. It’s what I see first-hand that sways my vote. I see Gloria Sidar, Lynn Fraelle, Don Dobrino, Dave Griffel, Billy Carter, Brian Frensko, Georgia Ribes, Melvin Mills and Jim Kelly on the front lines 365 days a year. Ask them for something when there isn’t an election going on, I bet they help you.
They have been doing it for years for no other reason than to make our home better. They are looking for results not publicity. Their DNA is all over the great organizations I mentioned earlier, through themselves and the families they raised. They will pull up their sleeves and help out at a moment’s notice. Always making decisions from their heart despite criticism of whether they are right or wrong, but never forgetting who they are fighting for.
I am blessed to be able to work with all these wonderful people and to be able to call them all friends. I am also honored to get to tell people about our great home. So, if a blessing can come from cancer, bragging on my community does that for me. There is another meaning for the question I’ve been hearing so much lately. “Who does that?” It’s about disbelief as well, but it’s not as positive.
I’ll just say this; don’t take my word for it, open your eyes. I live and see it daily. When you ask any of these public servants a question, you might not like the answer, but the answer will have substance and be honest. You can’t change the world if you don’t live in it and contribute to it. Get out and vote for those who do!
God Bless,
