LAWSUITS
A Brighton man is suing a Brighton woman for damages in excess of $50,000 for injuries he allegedly sustained to his back while installing drywall at the woman’s residence on Miles Station Road. The plaintiff, Ian Hampsey, claims the defendant, Denise Haden, failed to provide ladders or lifts for the project, causing him to injure his back. The suit seeks damages for Hampsey’s alleged injuries, pain and anguish, and medical costs.
Bridget Yeager is suing Casey’s General Stores for damages in excess of $50,000 for injuries she allegedly sustained when an entry door at the Carlinville Casey’s store sucked closed as a result of an air pressure imbalance when she entered the facility. The suit claims Yeager opened the left door of a double-door system on June 3, 2016, when the door was sucked into a closed position “as a result of air suction that developed in the store.” The door was sucked closed with “such force and violence” that Yeager sustained injuries to her left shoulder and upper arm. The suit alleges Casey’s was negligent in failing to ensure that air pressure would not cause the opened door to be violently sucked closed, failing to post signs or notices warning of the hazard, failing to eliminate air suction by ensuring proper air relief passages in the store, and failing to ensure that air suction did not pose a threat to the health, safety and welfare of customers entering the store. The suit seeks compensation for the plaintiff’s alleged injuries, pain, permanent disability, lost wages and medical expenses.
Henry Sanchez has filed a forcible entry and detainer complaint against Misty W. Rice, Carlinville, seeking an undisclosed amount for alleged unpaid rent that accrued after Rice was served with a Notice of Lease Termination and a Notice to Vacate. The suit also seeks possession of residential premises located in the 500 block of North West Street in Carlinville, attorney fees and court costs.
Carlinville Area Hospital is suing Richard W. and Brenda Pipkin, Nilwood, for $13,482.10, plus court costs, that the plaintiff claims is owed for hospital services provided between Nov. 25, 2013, and Dec. 5, 2016.
Central Illinois Realty Co. has filed a forcible entry and detainer against Kenneth and Keisha Hannah, Virden, seeking a judgment of $770 for alleged unpaid rent, plus $500 in attorney fees, court costs and possession of residential premises located at 27 Whispering Pines, Virden.
Central Illinois Realty Co., has filed a forcible entry and detainer complaint against Brian and Lacey Wessing, Virden, seeking $550 in alleged unpaid rent and late fees, $770 in attorney fees and court costs, and possession of residential premises located at 12 Whispering Pines, Virden.
State Farm Bank is suing Helen Lowery, Virden, for $13,564.90, plus court costs, that the plaintiff claims is owed on an allegedly defaulted credit account opened on Nov. 27, 2001.
Teresa Klaus, Carlinville, is suing Central Subsurface Contracting of Illinois (CSCI) for $15,000, plus court costs, that the plaintiff claims she is owed for damage done to the yard and landscaping at her home in the 900 block of South Broad Street during a 2015 drainage improvement project. According to the suit, CSCI was contracted with the City of Carlinville for a storm sewer improvement project. In January 2015, Klaus granted an easement to the company to use underground boring for improving an existing storm sewer. When the work began in July, the company encountered problems that forced workers to dig an open trench in lieu of underground boring. The suit claims Klaus gave the company permission to enter onto her property and dig the trench, with the understanding the company would fully restore her property with grass planting and planting of replacement bushes and trees. Those provisions were confirmed in a July 22, 2015, letter from the company, the suit claims. In mid-August, however, the company sent a letter to Klaus promising to install a jute erosion blanket on a hillside, but attempting to divert responsibility for grass seeding, and replacement trees and bushes to Klaus and her husband. The suit contends that Klaus never conceded to the terms contained in the August letter. Since she never conceded to the terms, the suit alleges CSCI trespassed on her property beyond the original easement, destroyed mature trees, landscape plantings, and bushes. Klaus seeks a judgment to compensate her for the cost of restoring her property to its original state.
Discover Bank is suing Bruce E. Layher, Staunton, for $24,645.22, plus court costs, that the plaintiff claims is owed on an allegedly defaulted credit card account.

Jones, Brighton, seeking $12,000 in alleged unpaid rent, plus additional rent accruing while the defendants continue to withhold possession of the property, attorney fees, court costs, and possession of residential premises located in the 1300 block of Dorchester Road, Brighton.
Jeffrey S. Robinson has filed a forcible entry and detainer complaint against Gregory Reed, Carlinville, seeking possession of residential premises located in the 600 block of Mulberry Street in Carlinville, plus additional damages. The suit claims Reed has no lease and is occupying the property as a trespasser.

BenGil Staff
The Macoupin County Clerk, Recorder, and Elections Office will temporarily relocate across the street to the Macoupin County Voting Center, located at 227 E. First South in Carlinville, beginning Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
The move is necessary to accommodate HVAC system renovations in the Macoupin County Courthouse. The temporary relocation is expected to last until mid-January 2026.
During this time, all regular services — including vital records, recordings, elections, and general clerk functions — will continue to be available at the Voting Center. Office hours and contact information will remain the same.
However, due to limited space during the renovation, public searching and certain in-person services may be restricted. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the many online services offered through the Clerk’s website, including:
- Searching and ordering vital records
- Accessing property and land records
- Viewing election information and forms
- Checking registration and voter status
“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these necessary improvements to the Courthouse,” said Macoupin County Clerk Pete Duncan. “Our goal is to continue serving the public efficiently and safely, whether in person or online.”
Residents can visit www.macoupincountyclerk.com, call 217-854-3214, text 217-439-4499, or email elections@macoupincountyil.gov or recorder@macoupincountyil.gov for updates, online resources, and additional information.
