
A fire that happened early Tuesday morning on Washer Road in rural Macoupin County is under investigation by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Macoupin County Coroner’s Office.
The fire was reported at 6:06 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31 and county sheriff deputies arrived to find a mobile home heavily consumed by the fire. The fire was quickly put out, according to the report, but firefighters found a body during a search of the structure. Authorities had not yet released the identity of the victim.
Unit 7 Fire Protection District and Mount Olive Fire Protection District, along with the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department and the Gillespie-Benld Area Ambulance Service, were called to a fire on Washer Road in rural Macoupin County.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters were at the scene for about four hours.
