Macoupin County Wild Riders
The Macoupin County Wild Riders Saddle Club is located out at the Gillespie Lake. It has been there for many years. The original club started out there 40 plus years ago and had shut down several times.
The Wild Rider board presently serving has done a tremendous job and is very dedicated to making the saddle club a place that everyone can be proud of. The show season this year started April 30 and they now have a show every 2 weeks except for this August, there was no show August 6 because of Dorchester picnic. The Saddle Club did not want to interfere with another organization and besides, there were several that rode their horse in the parade.
The Wild Riders strive to make this saddle club a place for the youth or anyone that is willing to learn about horses or just enjoys riding. It is just a friendly place for a beginner that has just started showing horses. There is always someone to help out a person if they need help.
The Wild Riders also serve as entertainment for the campers at the lake. “We have been told that some of the campers try to book their stay so they can view our show,” Terri Walker told us. Last year, the Wild Riders started having some clinics to help riders learn how to fix problems that they may be having with their horse. The club will be having another clinic this fall as their spring clinic was rained out.
Statistics show that there are more horses today than there were in the 1800’s. In contrast, today people are using their horses for recreation purposes such as showing and trail riding and the saddle club is simply just trying to help supply a place people can enjoy.
The club house for the Macoupin County Wild Riders has been there for almost as long as the show grounds. The founding fathers of the show grounds intended to have indoor facilities in the club house with rest rooms and a kitchen, but was never finished. The current board is working hard to be able to fulfill that task. Last year, Wild Riders applied for a grant through the Illinois Horse Council and was awarded with a portion of the money. With that money, the club was able to take down a few of the trees, with permission of the city, that could have caused a hazard and also put up a new arena fence. Although, that was only the beginning, there is still some work that they would like to do to the arena. The club would like to raise the arena level, so it will be able to drain properly. Many of the spring shows are cancelled due to the mud in the arena.
The club also went to a city meeting to see what we needed to do to put restroom facilities in our club house. The restroom facilities is going to take a lot of money, but they have already started fundraising for it. This year, the club is raffling off a print done by Roger Dewitt for a fundraiser. Roger was gracious enough to donate the print to the Wild Riders. The framed pencil print is 20″ x 33″, and it is beautiful.
The Wild Riders plan to try for another grant this next year, but donations and sponsorships are always accepted. Every winter the club has a sponsor drive to try and keep their sponsorship up. Without the sponsors, the club would be in serious economic trouble. Sponorships are only $35 and the membership rate is very cheap: $8 for a single and $15 for a family.

Bunker Hill – Zion Lutheran Church in Bunker Hill is excited to announce a rummage sale taking place on Thursday, March 20, Friday, March 21, and Saturday, March 22. The sale will be held at the church located at 609 East Warren Street in Bunker Hill. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to Illinois Valley Meals on Wheels in Macoupin County, a vital program that prepares and delivers over 1,500 meals daily to those in need across three counties.
Donations for the rummage sale are warmly welcomed and can be dropped off at the church’s north entrance starting Monday, March 17. Items of all kinds are appreciated, and your contributions will directly support the dedicated efforts of volunteers who ensure that nutritious meals reach our community members.
The sale will run from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday and then 8 AM to 4 PM on Friday and Saturday, making it convenient for everyone to stop by and find great deals while supporting a crucial service in our area.
