CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.– Saint Louis softball concluded its fall season with a 6-0-1 record by defeating Southeast Missouri State 4-1 and Missouri State 2-1 at the SEMO Round Robin October 1.
The Billikens jumped in front of SEMO 1-0 in the first inning as Katie Kroeger led off with a single, went to third on Alyson Brand’s one-out double and scored on a passed ball.
SLU made it 3-0 in the sixth. Brand’s leadoff single was followed by Jessica Van Nostrand’s one-out single that moved pinch runner Erin Harcar to third. After Van Nostrand stole second and Laura Bohning lined out, Kelsey Biggs delivered a two-run double.
The Redhawks finally reached Billiken right-hander Hannah Huebbe for a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Saint Louis re-established a three-run cushion in the seventh. Jessica Buschjost led off with a single, advanced to second on Kroeger’s sacrifice and scored on Brand’s two-out single.
Huebbe struck out 10 while allowing just four hits and one walk.
In the nightcap, Missouri State pushed across a run in the top of the fifth off SLU right-hander Kelcie Matesa. However, the Billikens won the game in unusual fashion in the bottom of the seventh.
Van Nostrand led off with a single, Biggs singled with one out, and Kerri Dockins‘ grounder to third forced Van Nostrand for the second out. Harcar reached on an error by the second baseman, with pinch runner Lindsay Friedman coming around to score the tying run. Harcar drew a throw as she broke for second, allowing Dockins to dart home and elude the tag for the winning tally.
Matesa fanned seven while yielding just five hits and walking two. Kroeger, Van Nostrand and Biggs had two hits apiece, with Biggs adding her second double on the day.
