Miles for Michael raises $7,500 for cancer victims
Michael Marcacci leads the 1-mile fun run/walk Saturday morning during the 4th annual Miles for Michael run/walk.
The 4th annual Miles for Michael run and walk was a day of hope, awareness, and celebration for all those affected by cancer. The family-oriented event took place at the Benld Fire Department on November 9 and raised approximately $7,500 for cancer victims. The organization was able to make a donation to both Nancy Boglino and James Holak Saturday afternoon.
Michael Marcacci, the 4-year old son of Mike and Susan Marcacci who the event was founded after, announced Saturday morning he is cancer-free. Upon the celebration after the announcement, Michael smashed his port with a hammer. Michael raced around the event and led the 1-mile participants with his Superman outfit and cape.
Nearly 200 runners and walkers gathered for the event, which had a silent auction as well. First place male and female runners were awarded with a medal for winning. 1-mile winners were Darren Edwards (7.33 minutes) and Kaily Frensko (8.51 minutes) and 5K winners were Darren Edwards (20.38 minutes) and Corrie Rizzi (23.08 minutes).
Live music provided by Howie’s Good time Rock n’ Roll filled the fire station while kids danced and adults checked out the silent auction items. Silent auction items included a Coach purse, Coach wallet, gift baskets from local businesses, and a scratch-off lottery ticket Christmas tree.
The event benefits Miles for Michael, which funds local cancer patients with hospital bills, fuel expenses, and day-to-day living expenses.
