The Gillespie baseball season came to an end last Friday in the regional semifinals after third-seed Carlinville beat the Miners in a 10-inning affair.
It was the third time this season the Miners faced Carlinville, but the first time the game didn’t end in Gillespie’s favor. Head coach Jeremy Smith and his team beat Carlinville 9-8 in the end of April and then again 16-5 a few days later.
The Miners had a 3-1 lead over Carlinville after six innings on play last Friday thanks to an RBI triple from Derick Engelke and doubles from Brock Werner and Tate Wargo, but the Cavies posted a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning from two walks, a ground out and an infield error committed by Gillespie.
The 3-3 tie extended the game into extra innings after the Miners came up short in the bottom of the seventh inning with two men on base and one out. Carlinville’s Hannig reached second in the top of the 8th inning with two outs but a ground out stranded him in scoring position. Both teams sat down their roster in order in the next three half innings before the Cavaliers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning.

With Brady Anderson on the mound for Gillespie in the 10th, Carlinville’s DeSpain was walked on four straight balls with one out in the scorebook. After a pair of infield errors left the bases loaded with two outs, Anderson walked in the go-ahead run putting the Cavaliers ahead 4-3. Gillespie got out of the two-out bases loaded jam on the next batter with a ground out to the third baseman.
Gillespie couldn’t rattle their bats in the bottom of the tenth despite facing Easterday who threw all 10 innings for Carlinville. The Miners had Eli Fox on first with one out, but a pair of fly balls to the centerfielder ended Gillespie’s chance to face Southwestern in the regional championship.
Wargo led Gillespie with a pair of hits while Engelke, Fox and Brock Werner each posted an RBI for the team. Werner pitched the first 6.1 innings for Gillespie striking out nine and walking seven for two earned runs before Anderson came in to close and pitch the remaining 3.2 innings. Anderson got the loss for Gillespie after facing 24 batters, walking two and striking out nine.
Smith and the Miners ended their season with a 16-8 record. Gillespie loses seniors Derick Engelke, Brock Werner and Brady Anderson.
Carlinville went on to lose to Southwestern-Piasa 1-15 on Saturday in the regional championship. Piasa advances to the Class 2A Vandalia Sectional.
