The Gillespie Miner basketball team suffered their first regular season loss last week to Nokomis, but fended off Vandalia later in the week for team’s second victory in Gillespie’s first home game in the 2014-2015 season.
Evan Price continues to lead the team on the offensive end while Quentin Zenner and Jacob Alepra swallow most of the team’s rebounds. Eli Fox and Colin Tieman carry the team on the defensive end with their quick hands and aggressive defensive style.
The team’s regular season record is now 2-1 with two games in the lineup for this week. Both games this week are at home as the Miners host Raymond tonight and the Greenville Comets on Friday evening. Following the game on Friday, Gillespie will have a six day rest before playing in the Carlinville Holiday Tournament next Friday against Carlinville at 6:30 p.m.
Gillespie 70, Vandalia 62
Gillespie finished last week with a come from behind victory over Vandalia in the team’s first home game of the season. The Miners got off to a slow start scoring only six points in the first quarter, but followed with 25 points in the second quarter to gain a 10-point lead at halftime, 31-21.

After Vandalia held Evan scoreless in the first quarter, he scored 15 in the second, four in the third and then 17 in the fourth to combine for 36 points in the matchup. Jacob Alepra and Quentin Zenner followed with 10 points each.
Vandalia outscored Gillespie 12-10 in the third quarter and both teams posted 29 points in the fourth quarter with over 20 points coming from the charity line as both teams were shooting bonus early in the last quarter of play. The Miners made 24 of 29 attempted from the charity line for an 83% free throw percentage Friday evening to earn their second victory in the regular season, 70-62.
Gillespie 39, Nokomis 59
The Miners couldn’t get anything going offensively in Nokomis last Tuesday. Blake Hayes led the team in the first quarter with four points as Gillespie outscored Nokomis 14-9, but then the Redskins broke away.
Nokomis was led by center B.J. Chausse and guard Reid Detmers who combined for 44 of Nokomis’ 59 points. Chausse was scoreless in the first quarter, but scored 11 in the second quarter as Nokomis outscored Gillespie 22-9 in the second quarter of play to lead 31-23 at halftime.
Evan Price was the only player from Gillespie who had double digits Tuesday evening as Price has 17 on the evening. Nick Price followed with nine and then Blake Hayes finished with 5. The Miners shot 60% from the charity line, but struggled the most in the third quarter as three players combined for only six points.
