The Gillespie High School football team (2-2) defended their home field against the visiting Southwestern-Piasa Birds (2-2) on Friday evening, but five turnovers in the second half led to a 13-40 loss.
The Miners and Birds held a close battle through the first half. Piasa scored the first points in the contest 10 minutes through the first quarter and took a 0-6 lead after the failed conversion.
Tate Wargo and Gillespie responded on their next drive covering 54 yards in the remaining minutes of the first quarter and first three minutes of the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead off a 16-yard touchdown reception by Bryce McKinney and Chandler McDaniel’s successful extra point.

Piasa later regained the lead off an 8-yard rushing attempt with 2:57 remaining in the first half and capped the drive with a successful two-point conversion making up for their failed conversion in the first quarter while putting the Miners behind by a touchdown.
At halftime, Gillespie trailed 7-14.
Piasa’s defense fared difficult for Gillespie in the second half. After opening the half by receiving the kickoff, Gillespie turned the ball over on all three drives in the third quarter – two turnovers by an interception and one by a fumble. The Birds used each turnover as an opportunity to extend their halftime lead.
Gillespie fell behind 12 points in the third quarter and trailed 7-26 heading into the final quarter of play.
The offensive woes continued in the fourth quarter for Gillespie as Piasa left their starting lineup in throughout the remaining 12 minutes. The Birds started the fourth quarter by capping a 61-yard drive with a 12-yard passing touchdown putting Gillespie behind 7-34.
The Miners’ first two offensive drives in the fourth quarter resulted in a turnover on downs. After the team’s second turnover in the fourth quarter, Piasa scored off a 41-yard rush moving the score to 7-40. It wasn’t until the end of the contest that Gillespie would strike again with around 3 minutes remaining on a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Corey McCallister.
The unsuccessful conversion left the score at 13-40.
