Staunton, IL – Macoupin County Board Chairman and candidate for State Senate in the 48th District Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) today announced endorsements from the United Mine Workers of America Local 1613 (UMWA), the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT), and the Macoupin County Democratic Party. The groups praised Manar for his forward-looking vision in the areas of energy production, effective government, and educational excellence for Downstate schools.
UWMA
“Andy Manar understands how crucial energy production is to our local economy. And he knows that Downstate has to be at the forefront of energy innovation in order to keep and create jobs,” said Donald Stewart, President of UWMA Local 1613.
Stewart praised Manar for his continued efforts to bring a clean-coal technology plant to the region in Taylorville. The coal plant project is commonly known as Taneska, named for the power development company that would design the plant. The facility is expected to inject billions into Illinois’ economy by creating thousands of local jobs in the construction, coal, and power production industries. The Illinois coal industry already brings in nearly $1 billion annually to the economy. 3,600 mine workers and nearly 20,000 employees in related jobs make Illinois 8th among coal producing states.
IFT
The Illinois Federation of Teachers, representing over 100,000 educational professionals and state employees, announced their backing of Andy Manar in Illinois’ 48th Senate District.
“Andy knows that decisions made in Springfield today long impact our children’s futures. He believes that every student, regardless of the school district in which they live, deserves a good education,” said Bruce Malone, President of IFT Local 4818. “Andy will stand up to those in Springfield who think we can take a recess from ensuring that students and teachers Downstate have the tools they need to be successful.”
Macoupin County Democratic Party
The Macoupin County Democratic Party today announced their endorsement of Andy Manar, a lifelong resident of Bunker Hill, for State Senate in the 48th District. Macoupin County Democratic Party Chairman Mike Mathis noted Manar’s record of results and his practical approach to governing as key factors in their endorsement.
“When the Board faced a budget crisis, Andy rose to the challenge, mandating efficiencies that resulted in a balanced budget. He did this while ensuring county jobs were not lost, sales taxes were not raised, and services were not cut. I cannot think of a better advocate for the working families of Macoupin County,” said Mathis.
