Walter Spotte of McMurray, PA passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2 in Naples, FL. He was 98.
He is survived by the love of his life, Joan, whom he married in 1987; daughter, R. Dayle Spotte; grandchildren, Evan Walter Clark Spotte-Smith and Kyra Spotte-Smith; nephews, Todd Spotti, Stephen Spotte, and Guy Spotti; and niece, Jane Spotte Ensign.
Walter led a full, meaningful and healthful life and was the quintessential American success story. He was the youngest child of Evaristo Frank Spotti and Emma Rose Truzzi. Walter graduated from Staunton High School in 1944 and then attended the University of Illinois.
Unfortunately, his studies were disrupted in 1945 when he was drafted by the U.S. Army. Following his discharge from the Army, he graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 with a degree in General Engineering. His professional career included positions with Consolidated Coal Company, Joy Manufacturing and the B.P. Tracy Company. In 1972, Walter created his own company, Lincoln Hydraulics, Inc. in Washington, PA.
After retiring, he sold the company in 2004. In addition to his surviving daughter, R. Dayle Spotte, Walter and his first wife, Dorothy Dulinski, had a second daughter, Nara Caroline. In 2004, Nara died from complications of pneumonia. In her memory, Walter and Dorothy’s financial contributions were instrumental in the development of Southwinds, a group home facility that served developmentally disabled adults.
While Walter’s travels took him to many places, he always maintained a special bond with the Staunton community. He provided an athletic training facility for the high school, MacBook computers, science laboratory equipment, electronic signs for each building and an electronic scoreboard for the football stadium.
One of Walter’s greatest attributes was making friends – whether he was holding court with his buddies at Panera’s or swapping stories with friends after a round of golf. Walter joined Nemacolin Country Club in 1969 and has made numerous financial contributions that have enhanced the club’s facilities. Walter was a founding member of Southpointe Golf Club and a member of Imperial Golf Club in Naples, FL where he and Joan enjoyed spending the winter months.
