Perseid Meteor Shower tonight and tomorrow

Perseid Meteor Shower of 2009, by NASA.
Prepare for an onslaught of shooting stars tonight and tomorrow because the 2013 Perseid meteor shower is on its way. NASA estimates the stunning light show should peak Monday, August 12.
Experts say August’s Perseid meteor shower is one of the most dependable sky shows of the year as long as the moon’s glare isn’t a factor. Luckily for us, the glare will not be a factor this year, NASA says, which means the show should be about as good as it gets.
The prime viewing hours should come tonight or Monday night. The peak is August 11 and August 12, but others say it is August 12 and August 13. It doesn’t seem like anyone knows.
“The predicted peak is around 2 pm CDT on the 12th,” Bill Cooke told NBC News. “I am leaning toward the night of the 11th, as there are usually more meteors seen leading up to the peak than after… if it were me, I’d go out both nights.”
So, there you have it from an expert’s perspective. Observers may view up to 60 meteors an hour this year, according to NASA. The display, which gets its name from the Perseus constellation, becomes visible every year in the Northern Hemisphere in late July or early August when Earth passes the remains of the Swift-Tuttle comet.
To catch glimpse of this annual showing, you will have to set aside a few hours of your sleep schedule to see the show when the moon sets shortly before dawn. Astronomers suggest the best viewing days will be August 11 through August 13 without a glare from the moon.
Bill Cooke went on so far to suggest gazers should let their eyes get “familiar” with the darkness for nearly 30 minutes. “Most people who are disappointed viewing meteors go out for only a few minutes expecting to see something: this will only work for major outbursts, not normal meteor showers,” Cooke wrote.
He did provide another helpful suggestion, Cooke said prepare to spend a couple hours outside if you are looking to see a good show, but don’t expect to see many meteors before midnight.
So, there you have it. Our eyes will be fixed on the sky over the course of the next two nights and we will post photos if we can catch any glimpses through our lens. An expert photographer only captured 60 meteors out of the 200 he saw last year, so our chances of getting many photographs are looking pretty slim.
