The Gillespie football team (2-5) showed up to play Friday night beating the visiting Roxana Shells 20-8 in front of an expanded Gillespie audience on homecoming night. The win gives the Miners their second win of the season with two games left on the schedule – in Greenville next week and hosting Staunton on senior night the last week of action. A victory both nights would list Gillespie as a playoff contender.
Tate Wargo led Gillespie with two touchdowns against the Shells – the first one on a 74-yard touchdown run and the second one with a 47-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Daniel Dobrino. The last touchdown for the Miners came late in the third quarter when Dobrino scored off a 7-yard quarterback keeper. There was only one lead change in the game after Roxana returned the kickoff following Gillespie’s first score of the game and converted for two points to take an 8-7 lead over the Miners.

Daniel Dobrino runs the ball as quarterback right into the heart of Roxana’s defense.

Tate Wargo fends off one defender and out legs another for a nice gain on the ground.

Gillespie’s defense leaves it all on the field Friday. In this play, Tanner King tackles Roxana for a loss on third down.
