BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan men’s and women’s track teams opened their indoor seasons with the IWU “First Chance” meet at the Shirk Center on Friday (Dec. 2).
Winners for the women were senior Lauren Alpert in the 300 meter dash with a time of 40.58 seconds, sophomore Sarah Bussman in the 600 meters (1:47.20), junior Tara Clemens in the mile (5:11.45) and freshman Kelsey Buerger in the 3000 meter run (11:52.26).
Freshman Meredith Beird tied for first in the pole vault at a height of 10 feet-11 ¾ inches and the women’s 4×400 relay team won in a time of 4:02.12.
IWU men’s team winners were senior Steven Kirk in the weight throw with a distance of 58 feet-2 inches and Aaron Smith in the 600 (1:22.77).
The Titans got second place finishes from freshman Lexia Swope in the 55 (7.44 seconds) and senior Caitlin Eskew in the 200 (27.32). Eskew placed fourth in the 55 and Swope was fourth in the 200. In track events, junior Lauren Rock was second in the 300 (41.21), sophomore Tiffany Zumpf in the 800 (2:50.87) and junior Taylor Cordes in the 55 meter hurdles (8.89 seconds).
Senior Gaby Johnson (5 feet-3 inches) was second in the high jump and freshman Kelli Herlitz was second in the triple jump (34 feet-11 ¼).
Second place track finishes for the men came from freshman Michael Bradley in the 800 (2:22.11), sophomore Bobby Castillo in the mile (4:31.98), freshman Jeff Torasson in the 55 meter hurdles (8.37), and the 4×400 relay (3:26.60).
Sophomore Joey Pacione was second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-7 ¾ inches.
