School Board Approves Foundation Bid
Hyde recommends to go with Korte & Luitjohan's $1,104,560 bid for foundation and structural steel.
The school district approved the foundation and structural steel bid package on Monday, October 17 during a special board meeting as they continued discussion about the five year plan. The board approved Korte & Luitjohan’s bid of $1,104,560 for the foundation and structural steel. Under Tom Hyde’s recommendation, the board approved the $1.1 million bid after a 5-0 vote.
Korte & Luitjohan is out of Highland, Illinois and has worked for Hyde on a smaller project. Hyde received eight bids on the third round of bidding, which is exceptional good according to Hyde. “We were expecting bids in the range of $1.4 – $1.8 million, but this is below than what we were expecting so this is good,” Hyde went on to tell the school district.
All bidders were pre-qualified and were required to submit prequalification statements along with a project completed and a list of references that were checked out by Graham & Hyde Architects, Inc. Korte & Luitjohan will use workers out of local unions.
After the board approved the bid, Superintendent Paul Skeans requested technology director Mark Carpani to demonstrate the Promethean interactive white board that is fitted in the budget to provide a white board in each classroom of the new elementary school.
Skeans leaned on Carpani because the school board is looking at adding more Promethean boards throughout the middle school and high school. “We want to move up on the technology component,” Skeans said.
Benld Elementary and the Gillespie Middle School are holding a bake sale this Saturday in efforts to add 4 boards to the middle school or high school. The fundraiser has already gained $3,800 in funds from a donation, so the district will be able to purchase 2 boards after the other $3,800 is earned. Promethean is running an incentive program now if you can raise $3,800, which is the cost of one board, they will match your funds and provide a second for free. Carpani, the technology supervisor of CUSD #7, demonstrated the powerful board during the meeting Monday night. “I want to give you a real feel for the board. It is not an ordinary projector, it is a very high resolution projector,” Carpani said. The board, which has sound integrated in it already features touch screen and is very crisp and clear while being seen at every angle without a glare. The Promethean board is cutting edge stuff, according to Carpani. “This is where I would like to be, technology wise,” Carpani instructed.

Mark Carpani went on to demonstrate the capabilities of the interactive whiteboard for the school board. Carpani used the board as a whiteboard and then introduced some of the educational games that are featured on the board, for free. The board is not only a whiteboard, but its a lesson plan. The board features thousands of lesson plans and tools available on the Promethean website than can be downloaded for free by the teacher.
Labs will love the board because they are able to view the anatomy of the body as well as bone structures and numerous other features. Every class will be able to use the whiteboard, as Carpani demonstrated history lessons about Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the structure of a volcano.
CUSD #7 has upgraded their technology over the course of the last few years under Carpani, according to Skeans.
