South County New’s Editorial Page Named Best in Southern Illinois

Published

on

The editorial page of the South County News has again been recognized as the best in southern Illinois in the Southern Illinois Editorial Association’s annual Better Newspapers competition.

The local newspaper also brought home second place among large weekly newspapers for best newspaper design and third place for best use of photography.  The awards were announced during SIEA’s annual spring meeting last Friday at Giant City State Park Lodge near Makanda.

The SIEA Better Newspaper Contest features two competitions; one in which member newspapers are judged on the basis of two editions published during the year, and one in which members may submit entries in specific categories.  For the first competition, newspapers are judged against other newspapers of similar size.  For the submitted entries contests, all papers of all sizes are judged together.

South County News was judged among other weekly newspapers in southern Illinois which are considered “large weeklies,” having a circulation of 2,800 or more.  “For the past several years, our editorial page has been the top winner in our class,” said Dave Ambrose, publisher and editor of the South County News.  “We are understandably proud of that record, and we very much appreciate the recognition from our peers in the industry.”

In the “submitted entries” portion of the contest, South County News took second place for best editorial with an editorial headlined  “Biker Church,” a story focusing on the Hellfighters motorcycle ministry.

“Excellent editorial,” judges said SCN’s winning editorial. “Lots of good interesting local facts and well argued.”  Commenting on the SCN’s winning feature story entry, judges noted: “Great combination of bold headline, photo and text to pull me into this story and make me want to read it.  Because this is not a “typical” church, the headline, photo and story have a lot more reader interest.  Good use of quotes to add flavor to the story.”

“As many of our readers know, the past year has been a tough one for South County News,” Ambrose said. “The SIEA awards are a testament to our commitment to excellence despite adversity.  Obviously, we appreciate the continued support of our readers and advertisers who make it possible for us to publish a quality product.”
