Scrap Iron & Gold will kick off the CCCC’s annual summer concert series.
The Coal Country Chamber of Commerce 10th Annual Summer Concert Series will bring music to our area again this year every Tuesday in June and July, beginning tonight in the Benld City Park. Scrap Iron and Gold will kick the series off tonight beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting about 90 minutes.
Returning for their second series, the bluegrass and gospel band consists of seven members: Doug Glenn, banjo; Brenda Oberle, keyboard and vocals; Rick Calvert, lead guitar and lead vocal; Sondra Stallman, fiddle; Ron Lawrence, founder of the band, mandolin and vocals; Sandy Leithauser, keyboard and vocals; and Andy Ritchie, 12 string guitar and vocals.
The band was founded in spring of 2009 and has picked up a first place award at the county fair in 2009 when they played “I’ll Fly Away.” Soon after the fair performance, three ladies were introduced into the band on vocals, keyboards and fiddle. This mix of four men and three ladies discovered the “Scrap Iron and Gold” sound consistent of fiery banjo tunes, gospel favorites, novelty songs, sounds of the civil war on fiddle and patriotic favorites.
The park is open at 6 p.m. and the concession stand will be selling hot dogs, “big smokies”, Italian beef, soda and water, and strawberry shortcake sundaes.
The concert series is free to the public and will run through June and July. Patrons regularly bring their own lawn chairs and enjoy the concerts rain or shine because the concerts take place under the pavilion. Parking is free and dancing is often enjoyed.
