Students at Gillespie High School enrolled in a trades’ class continue to practice what they learn. Last week the class poured a concrete sidewalk in Gillespie.
Annetta Veres was joined by Wilsonville Community Outreach members Jody Reeves and Barbara Kirkwood as the trio participated in the Illinois Coalition for Community Services’ “step challenge”.
Gillespie High School soccer players braved the rain and cold temperatures yesterday to raise funds for the upcoming season.
The Coal Country Chamber of Commerce celebrated the new location of Hair by Katie Eccles at 310 S. Macoupin St. in downtown Gillespie with a ribbon cutting. Hair by Katie is an exclusive Paul Mitchell FOCUS(R) Salon, Color, Products, & Tools.
Doug Ratterman of HMG Engineers presented the Benld City Council an estimated cost of $42,341.48 for street maintenance in 2016. Read more about the meeting here.
Hundreds of people supported H.E.I.D.I. and a number of local businesses yesterday at the group’s annual Holiday Market at the Gillespie Civic Center in downtown Gillespie.

One of the most popular vendors yesterday was Fight the Fight, an area non-profit charity business. The business thanked their patrons from yesterday on a Facebook post last night.

Meet this year’s candidates vying for the title of 2018 Miss Black Diamond Days and 2018 Junior Miss Black Diamond Days. The pageant will take place on Friday, June 1 in the Ben-Gil Elementary School gymnasium starting at 6 p.m. and crowning this year’s royalty will be 2017 royalty Maya Marcacci and Chloe Hedrick. Over 120 students at Gillespie High School enjoyed great weather Saturday evening as they walked into this year’s prom, themed “Black and White Ball”. Walk-ins took place from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. immediately followed by coronation where Chase Odell-Mueller and Mackenzie Kasarda were named 2018 King and Queen.
Prom endured until 11 p.m. and then post prom was available to the students.
