More than 100 people attended Friday night’s wine tasting fundraiser which benefited the Benld Public Library. The two hour event, which took place at the Benld Civic Center, was sponsored by TJ’s Liquor Store.
TJ’s, a local Benld icon and business, brought over 25 wines for wine connoisseurs to taste. In addition to TJ’s, Donnewald Distributing also brought close to 15 additional bottles of wine and some beer.
Connoisseurs had two hours to taste, eat, and socialize. The library treated the guests to a twelve foot table of various cheeses and crackers.
Midway through the event, 8 lucky winners got their choice of a free bottle of wine to take home. After the wine raffle, 2 additional guests were drawn to have their choice between two gifts from the library.
According to Mary Newman, the turnout was higher than last year. “It is great to see all the support from the community for the library,” Mary went on to say.
The library, which is currently undergoing construction, was sinking. Many bricks were dug up from underneath the building and grouting is set to begin next week. “We are still open for business,” Newman said. The library advises customers to park on the street as the parking lot will be closed off for quite some time.
All the work being done on the library is also footed by the library. Phase 1 of the construction work cost nearly $4,500 per day and phase 2 is estimated to cost up to $6,800 each day. After phase 2, there will be one final phase, but the dollar figure will depend on how much concrete is being poured.
There is much speculation over the best wine.
Terry Plovich, owner of TJ’s in Benld, said he did not expect to see nearly as many that turned out. “I am glad we have this and glad to help out with the library,” Plovich said, “The library has some problems right now.” As a local guy, it makes Plovich feel good to help out in the community.
This was the first year TJ’s was asked to do the library’s tasting, but Plovich and TJ’s anticipate helping out in the future or anytime they need help. “We are all for helping the community,” Plovich stated.
