The Mt. Olive Wrestling Wildcats scored 84.5 points in the 18-team Rich Lovellette Litchfield tournament to finish in 11th place last Saturday. The team had one second place finish, two fourth place finishers and three sixth place finishers.
Mt. Olive’s Shon Calvert in the 152-pound class helped the Wildcats to the 11th-place finish after finishing in second. Calvert received a bye, won by fall, won 5-4 and lost by fall to score 22 team points.
Gavin Bertoldi (106) and Maxx Fritz (132) finished in the top four of their weight classes scoring nine and 15 team points respected while Braden Barnes (113), Lee Welch (138) and Jonny Darrah (145) finished sixth for the Wildcats scoring a combined 35 points.
Bertoldi won 4-2, lost by fall, and lost by fall while Fritz won by fall, won by fall, lost 12-2 and lost 3-1 in overtime. Barnes lost 13-2, received a bye, won by fall and lost 11-2. Welch won by fall, lost 5-4, won by fall, won by major decision and lost by fall. Darrah won by fall, lost 5-4, won 13-4, won by fall and lost 5-4.
Matt Darrah (160) and Chris Fyffe (285) each won one and lost two during their three matches scoring 3 team points each. Boe Gipson and Tim Hancock each wrestled and lost two bouts.
Mt. Olive travels to Roxana to wrestle in the regional on February 7 with wrestling scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Teams in the regional are Alton Marquette, Belleville Althoff, Carrollton, Carlinville, Litchfield, Hill, Mt. Olive, Pittsfield, Roxana, and Wood River.
