The Mt. Olive/Gillespie Wrestling Wildcats advanced four individuals over the weekend to the Class A Sectional Tournament to be held in Carterville on February 12 and 13. Advancing to sections are Maxx Fritz, Jonny Darrah, Dylan Roberts and Jacob Whited.
As a team, Mt. Olive placed sixth in the regional with 68 points. Belleville Althoff won the regional with 145 points, Pittsfield followed with 129, then Roxana with 126, Wood River with 11 and Carlinville in fifth with 115 points.
Fritz, Darrah and Roberts each placed second for the Wildcats in the 145, 152 and 182 respected weight classes. Whited placed third wrestling at 106. Fritz received a bye, won by fall and lost the championship match to Danny Braunagel of Belleville Althoff 8-2 to score 18 team points.
Darrah received a bye, won by 7-4, and lost the championship 18-8 to Zac Blozioli of Wood River to score 12 team points. Roberts received a bye, won by fall, and lost by fall in the championship to Wade Thiele of Pittsfield to score 18 team points.
Whited won 4-3, lost by fall, received a bye, and won by fall in the third place bout over Xavier Lewis of Carlinville to score 14 team points.
Sectional wrestling is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Semifinals and wrestlebacks are scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday with the championships and third place bouts scheduled for 1 p.m. in the afternoon.
Four regionals (Belleville Althoff, Harrisburg, Mt. Carmel and Shelbyville) advance their top three place winners in each weight class to the Carterville Sectional. The first, second, third and fourth place winners in each weight class at Carterville advance to the State Wrestling Tournament at Champaign to be held on February 18, 19, and 20.
