Dennis Edward Viehweg, 68, of Litchfield, and former resident of Mt. Olive and Gillespie, passed away Saturday, May 14, at 5:25 a.m. at Heritage Health and Senior Care of Litchfield. He was born in Litchfield on August 5, 1947, a son of Edward Gustav and Aileen Marie (Smith) Viehweg.
Mr. Viehweg grew up in Mt. Olive. He was a graduate of Litchfield Community High School Class of 1968. His working career included Gibson’s Discount City, Mohr Value, The Garden’s, Adenca, Wal-Mart, Ponderosa, Mt. Olive High School, and Aladdin Steel.
He was a valuable community volunteer working with the Litchfield Christmas Basket Assn., Meals on Wheels, and St. Timothy United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen. He collected high school boys’ and girls’ basketball programs and was an avid sports fan and a big supporter of the LHS sports teams.
Dennis was a faithful member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield and was involved in the youth ministry. He was a member of Hillsboro Toastmasters Club, Illinois Prairieland Walk to Emmaus, and Senior Achievers. He was a graduate of the Lincoln Land Community College T.E.A.L. program.
Mr. Viehweg is survived by his sister, Patricia (Gary) Scheller of Highland; brother, Mark (Karen) Viehweg of Litchfield; nieces, Susan (Mike) Pollard of Highland, Dara (Paul) Houska of St. Louis and Jenna (Darren) Glore of Springfield; nephews, Mark Viehweg, Jr. and Trevor Viehweg, both of Litchfield; great niece, Nataleigh Houska; and great nephew, Noah Houska.
Mr. Viehweg was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Mitchell Scott Viehweg.
Visitation services will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at St. Timothy United Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Rev. James Tinzmann officiating. A luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Private family burial of Mr. Viehweg’s ashes will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield.
The family suggests memorials to Litchfield Christmas Basket Association or St. Timothy U.M.C. Soup Kitchen.
