The Miners jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but couldn’t hold off the Auburn Trojans as they fell 12-7. The Miners are now 0-2 on the season.
Michael Bussman, a junior, started for the Miners on the mound and lasted 2 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits, 6 walks, and 3 earned runs while striking out 3. Halpin relieved him in the 2nd and lasted almost 4 innings giving up 4 hits, a walk, and 4 earned runs. Senior Trae Wargo, Gillespie’s ace, finished the game for the Miners striking out 2 while giving up 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 earned runnings. The Miners’ defense had 4 errors on the day.
Even though the Miners’ defense struggled, the offense had little problems with the Auburn pitching staff. The Miners finished the game with 9 hits, 2 more than the Trojans. Joey Balzraine led the team going 2-4 with a double and a single. Wagner, Wargo, Henderson, Hellman, Stewart, Bussman, and Link all contributed 1 hit each.
Overall, the Miners’ bats couldn’t overcome the defensive letdowns. The Miners’ pitching staff finished with 9 walks, 7 hits, and 9 earned runs. Compounding the pitching struggles, the Miners’ defense committed 4 early-season errors. With those kinds of defensive numbers, it’s hard for a team to get in the win column. In their first game of the season, the Miners struggled at the plate, while excelling in the field. Today’s game was the complete opposite. Once they put together a complete game, the Miners will be a contender for the Prairie State conference.
