The wrestling Wildcats advanced four individuals last weekend to the Class AA Sectional Tournament scheduled to be played in Lincoln on February 9 and 10. Champions for the Wildcats were Maxx Fritz at 152 and Jonny Darrah at 160. Placing second for the Wildcats was Justin Osmoe at 182 and placing third for the Wildcats was John Aljets.
Team scores were Cahokia 202, East St. Louis 119, Bethalto 110, Mascoutah 86.5, Mt. Olive 84, Triad 82, Waterloo 72.5, Highland 57, Jerseyville 40, and Freeburg 0.
Fritz pinned Isaac Wojickiewcz of Bethalto and won the championship 5-3 over second ranked Martell Boone of Cahokia scoring 18 team points. This became a four man bracket as all schools attempted to avoid these two fine wrestlers in Fritz and Boone.
Darrah therefore had a full 8-man bracket. He pinned Cole Glowacki of Waterloo, won by major decision 11-2 over Brady Christenson of Bethalto, and won the championship 12-5 over Zeke Waltz of Jerseyville. He scored 21 team points. Osmoe pinned Michael Aubuschon of Waterloo, won 6-2 in overtime over Kaleb Port of Triad, and lost the championship bout to Arnold Edwards of Cahokia by fall. He scored 16 team points.
Aljets pinned Nate Miller of Mascoutah, lost by fall to the eventual champion Danny Brownlee of Cahokia, pinned Tyler Frank of Highland, and won the third place bout by fall over Ross Speidel of Jerseyville to score 16 team points.
Gavin Bertoldi at 126 finished fourth in his weight class and will be an alternate to the 126 pound class for the sectional tournament. He won 7-5 over Tevin Moore of Cahokia, lost by fall to Hudson Brown of Bethalto, won by fall over Caleb Machuga of Highland in overtime, and lost by fall to Zion Wilhite of East St. Louis to score 9 team points.
Evan Morris at 145 scored four team points with a pin of Colby Davis of Highland and two losses one in the semifinals and one in the semifinal wrestlebacks. Morris as a freshman is expected to improve greatly over the next three years.
Also participating in this 2A regional was sophomore Amber Speitel, Junior Tiffany Tiepleman, freshman Owen Scheller, and sophomore Lilly Aljets.
The four qualifiers will wrestle in the Lincoln sectional with wrestling scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 9. Semifinals and wrestlebacks are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, February 10 and the championships and third place bouts are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Four regionals (Jacksonville, Mahomet Seymour, Mascoutah, and Mattoon) advance their top three place winners in each weight class to the Lincoln Sectional. The first, second, third and fourth place winners in each weight class at Lincoln advance to the State Wrestling Tournament at Champaign to be held on February 15, 16, and 17.
