No expense to taxpayers

Carlinville – On Tuesday, County Board Chairman Andy Manar joined representatives of Macoupin-Montgomery Counties Crime Stoppers, Sheriff Don Albrecht, and Macoupin County Deputies Ron Maedge and Chris Thomas to welcome new protective vests for deputies in the County Sheriff’s office. Grant funding and a crime stoppers donation cover more than 60% of the cost.
Manar said that more than sixty percent of the cost to purchase the vests was covered by a $3,100 grant from the Illinois Public Risk Fund and a $3,500 donation from the Macoupin-Montgomery Counties Crime Stoppers organization.
“Not a single taxpayer dollar was used to purchase the vests that will undoubtedly provide a safer environment for our deputies out in the field,” said Manar. “This marks the second time in the last two months that the County Board and Sheriff have worked together to save taxpayers money by aggressively applying for available grant funding.”
The ballistic, protective, body armor vests currently in use by the Sheriff’s deputies were manufactured in 2006 and have outlasted their recommended useful life according to Sheriff Don Albrecht. After receiving grant funding and the donation from Crime Stoppers, Albrecht said the remaining balance was paid from the Public Safety Fund which receives revenue through fees received from the Sheriff’s office accepting bonds. Currently, 21 members of the office rely on protection of the vests.
“Promoting public safety is the number one priority for our deputies each and every day they are on the job,” said Albrecht. “Now, with the addition of these new vests, our force will be able to perform their own jobs with a renewed level of security.”
Manar and Albrecht said that without the help of Crime Stoppers and the receipt of grant funding, the Sheriff’s office would have had a difficult time finding available funding to pay for the vests as quickly as they did.
“Whenever we have the opportunity to help local law enforcement in either of our two counties and we are able to see a real need as we did here with the Macoupin County Sheriff’s office, we are happy to lend our support,” said Past President and current Macoupin-Montgomery Counties Crime Stoppers Board Member Steve Meyer.
Albrecht said his office worked with Chairman Manar’s office and Chief Financial Officer Gabe Springer to apply for and receive the grant from the Illinois Public Risk Fund.
