George Wilber Strohmeier, 84, of Bunker Hill, IL, went to be with the Lord at 3:14 pm Saturday, January 5, 2013 at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL with his family at his side. He was born on September 11, 1928, in Edwardsville, IL to the late Herman & Edna (Dustman) Strohmeier. George married the love of his life, Sally Ann (File) on August 6, 1950, Bethalto, IL.
George was a self-employed farmer, loved to dance, play cards, and spend time with his family. He served on the school board for many years and was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Bunker Hill, IL. He served on many church boards and sang in the choir.
In 2008, he was elected Deacon Emeritus. He served as a surveyor in the Army for 2 years and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion for 50 years, serving as Chaplain for many of those years.
He is survived by his wife Sally, 4 children, Georgann (James) Morgando of Hillsboro, IL, Keith (Tana) Strohmeier of Bunker Hill, IL, Richard (Sheri) Strohmeier of Bunker Hill, IL, Beth (Roger) Scroggins of Indianapolis, IN, 11 grandchildren, Deric Morgando, Jeremy Strohmeier, Nicole Stephens, Stephanie Heiens, Erin Scroggins, Colten Strohmeier, Kathryn Scroggins, Sydney Anderson, Spencer Strohmeier, Savannah Strohmeier, Skylar Strohmeier, 3 step grandchildren, Tony Harrison, Brandie Turner, Dustin Feezel, 13 great grandchildren, sister, Dorothy Meyer of Staunton, IL, brother, Lester Strohmeier of Edwardsville, IL, several nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, great great nieces & nephews.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his grandson, James Patrick Morgando II, sisters, Laura Schmidt, Estella Strohmeier & brother, Elmer Strohmeier.
Friends may call on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at First Congregational Church, Bunker Hill, IL from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11:00 am at First Congregational Church, Bunker Hill, IL with Rev. Jeremy Wood officiating. Burial will be at Bunker Hill Cemetery, Bunker Hill, IL. Memorials suggested to First Congregational Church of Bunker Hill, IL.
