John Willard Gray, 78, died at 2:45 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in Alton with his loving family by his side. He was born in Williamson County, IL on February 20, 1934, to the late William C. and Afton Berniece (Bloodworth) Gray. He married Beverly (Barkley) Gray on Oct. 14, 1956, in Herrin, Ill. She died March 3, 1983. Later he married Sue (Taul) Gray on June 22, 1985, in Brighton. She survives.
Early in life John was employed at General Motors. He worked the assembly lines. He then became the owner/operator of Gray’s Amoco in Brighton. After John sold the gas station he then started to work at Werts’s Auto Car Wash. As everyone knows, the car wash was more than a job; it was John’s social outlet.
John was active within the community. He was generous with others, always lending a helping hand to anyone in need. John was a member of, Hibbard Masonic Lodge No. 246
He is survived by three daughters, Lynn Cropper of Barn Hill, IL, Denise Hausman, and Penny Ellen Gray both of Alton; one step-daughter, Cynthia Hays of Brighton, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Delores Rauch of Dupo, IL, and Berneice and Raymond McCormick of Marion, IL, one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Phyllis Gray of St. Louis County, Mo.
His parents, first wife, Beverly Gray, his son Keith Gray, his brother, Jack Gray, and two sons-in-law: Willard Hausman and Steve Cropper preceded him in death
The visitation will be Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Targhetta & Wooldridge Funeral Home-Brighton from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 11, 2013 at 10:00am at Targhetta & Wooldridge Funeral Home- Brighton. Burial will be at Brighton Cemetery. Memorials suggested to Crossroads Community Church.
