Emmons hired to fill vacant principal position

During a special scheduled district board meeting on June 3, the school board hired Lori Emmons for school year 2013-2014 to fill the vacant secondary school principal position by a 5-2 vote with objection from Billy Carter and Dave Griffel. The position was previously held by Mr. Dennis Tiburzi who retired two weeks ago on May 20, 2013.
“The administration has put together a plan and spent a lot of time putting together a plan,” Griffel commented, “But, I am not comfortable committing to this plan for this length of time. It has no reflection on Lori Emmons, I am just not comfortable with the plan the administration has.”
Emmons was currently serving as the middle school principal. There was no speculation whether Emmons will be principal over both middle school and high school or how long her contract will be, but more details will be released in upcoming meetings on whether she will be principal of both buildings. The board will also discuss a secondary school administrator/dean of students position.
Ms. Lori Emmons joined district 7 in August of 1999 when she was hired as a special education resource teacher. In April of 2008, Emmons was hired as principal of the middle school. Emmons earned her high school diploma from Gillespie High School in 1987 and continued her education at Southern Illinois University at Edwarsdville where she earned both her bachelor’s degree in special education learning disabilities and her master’s degree in education administration.
Before being hired in 1999 in Gillespie, Emmons taught special education in a cross categorical classroom for Sangamon Area Special Education District in Girard. “I had the blessing of working with wonderful people there for 5 years,” she added. “The administrator of the high school at the time was Dr. Jaunita Rule, a Gillespie High School graduate.” Jaunita Rule was inducted onto the GHS Wall of Honor this past spring.

“I anticipate hard work,” Emmons said of the new position. “But, also the benefit of seeing my middle school students move on.” Currently, she said she is trying to work with Mr. Tiburzi and Mr. Tieman on new ideas and needs before school resumes in August. Emmons went on to add that any change takes time for everyone to get used to. “With all of the setbacks our district has faced since I have been an administrator here, I feel the residents, businesses, staff, and administrators at CUSD #7 have really come through and been here for one another. It’s one the best characteristics of the people in this district.”
The school board went on to award two furniture and equipment bids during the new business section. The board awarded furniture bids to Illini Supply for $105,267 and Resource One for $13,232. Tom Hyde also recommended a change order of $21,378 to Contegra Construction for the purchasing, delivering, and installation of 124 plastic laminate book cases. The book cases are the same style and colors to match the rooms now with 3 book cases per classroom and additional ones throughout the building. “It’s a much better price than buying the bookcases on the street,” Hyde explained.

The board also went on to pass a resolution required by LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED is certifying the building as gold and required a resolution stating the site plan was reviewed and approved. The resolution of the site plan serving as the long range master plan for the development of the new elementary school was approved 7-0.
